Meet the Tutors
The tutors of Northwest Houston Sylvan Learning Center are all Sylvan trained and certified so that they can best address your child’s academic needs. Our tutors are dedicated to working closely with you and your child in order to help your child reach his or her goals. We start by pinpointing your child’s strengths and areas for improvement through the Sylvan Skills Assessment®. From there, our Northwest Houston staff develops a personalized learning plan for your child and offers unique insights about what methods will work best with your child. Ultimately, our tutors will build a relationship with your child and provide a fun, engaging, and rewarding learning environment. The Northwest Houston Sylvan Learning Center staff consists of highly experienced and established educational professionals who take great pride in their work with students who want to catch up, keep up, or get ahead.
Emily Merino
Center Director
Emily is a graduate of Sam Houston State University where she earned a Bachelor of Arts in Speech Communication. She is also certified to teach EC-4 Generalist, Bilingual, ESL and Spanish 6-12. In her free time, Emily enjoys pursuing her Masters in Education. At Sylvan, she enjoys the personalized attention that is devoted to each student due to the 3:1 student/teacher ratio.
Emily is Sylvan certified to teach the following programs: Academic Reading, Beginning Reading, Math Essentials, Study Skills, Advanced Math, Homework Support, Academic Writing, Handwriting Without Tears and Basic Skills Review.
Christina Arnold
Director of Education
Certified Mathematics Instructor
Christina is a graduate of Kingwood College and Sam Houston State University where she earned both her Associates and Bachelors degrees in Science. She holds a Generalist EC-8th teaching certificate and is a Sylvan Certified Math Instructor. Christina has been involved with Sylvan Learning Center for the past three years and is excited to become the Director of Education at the Champions Sylvan Learning Center. For Christina, the best part of Sylvan is the joy of helping all her students.
Gloria Theiss
Associate Director of Education
Gloria Theiss has been with Sylvan Learning Center for seven years, first as a teacher and most recently as an Associate Director. She completed her Bachelors of Art and her Masters of Education at Sam Houston University. After completing her studies she became a public school teacher in Klein School District at Haude Elementary, where she has remained for the past 37 years. Gloria loves to see the happiness and confidence on the faces of the students she works with at Sylvan.
Gloria is Sylvan certified to teach the following subjects: Academic Reading, Beginning Reading, Math Essentials, Academic Writing, Study Skills, Handwriting Without Tears and Basic Skills Review.
Susan Bullock
Associate Director of Education
Susan has been a public school educator for twenty-seven years, receiving her Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education from Sam Houston State University. Susan joined Sylvan fourteen years ago and is an Associate Director of Education and has learned that the “Sylvan Secret” is dedicated teachers and individualized programs. Personally assisting students and their families to reach their goals is Susan’s favorite aspect of the Sylvan Experience.
Susan is Sylvan certified to teach the following subjects: Academic Reading, Beginning Reading, Math Essentials, Academic Writing, Study Skills, Handwriting Without Tears and Basic Skills Review.
Ann Benoit
Certified Mathematics Instructor
Ann is a graduate of Texas Tech University where she earned both a Bachelors and Masters of Art. Ann has worked for the Champions Sylvan Learning Center for the past year where she is a Sylvan Certified Math Instructor. Outside of Sylvan she enjoys yoga and cooking. At Sylvan she enjoys playing a role in building a student’s self-confidence.

Greg Corradino
Certified Mathematics Instructor
Greg is a graduate of Georgia Southern University where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Biology as well as graduating from the University of Florida with a Masters in Clinical Epidemiology. He is certified to teach Life Science grades 8-12 as well as being a Sylvan Certified Math Instructor. In his free time, Greg enjoys reading, playing video games and spending time with his wife and puppies. At Sylvan, he enjoys knowing that he is filling in the gaps to make a student more successful in school.

Richard Wiseman
Certified Mathematics Instructor
Richard began working for the Champions Sylvan 23 years ago, experiencing, first hand, the changes Sylvan makes to stay in the forefront of education. With 37 years of teaching experience, Richard teaches the Sylvan Beginning Reading, Academic Reading, Math Essentials, Academic Writing, and Study Skills programs. A favorite memory at Sylvan is teaching a 25 year old non-reader to read. With Richard’s patience and encouragement, he completed our reading program and enrolled in a technical school.
Richard is Sylvan certified to teach the following programs: Academic Reading, Beginning Reading, Academic Writing, Study Skills, Homework Support, Advanced Math, Algebra I and II, Geometry and Basic Skills Review.
Pat Ashton
Certified Instructor
Pat has been a member of the Champions Sylvan for the last two years. She attended SUNY College at Oneonta where she earned a Bachelors of Science in Education. She also holds certificates to teach Elementary and High School. At Sylvan, Pat enjoys working with the students.
Laurie is Sylvan certified to teach the following programs: Academic Reading, Beginning Reading, Academic Writing, Math Essentials, Study Skills and Handwriting Without Tears.
Mandy Parker
Certified Instructor
Mandy is a graduate of Sam Houston State University where she earned a Bachelor of Arts in Education. She is also certified to teach English/Language Arts/Reading grades 8-12. In her free time, Mandy enjoys reading and spending tiem with family. At Sylvan, she enjoys being able to help students achieve their goals.

Gregg Smith
Certified Instructor
Gregg is a graduate of the University of North Texas where he earned a Bachelors of Education and the University of Clear Lake where he earned a Masters degree in Education (reading). He is certified to teach in both Texas and Nevada. In his free time, Gregg enjoys reading fictional books and church activities. At Sylvan, he enjoys seeing the growth and improvement academically in the students lives.
Laurie is Sylvan certified to teach the following programs: Academic Reading, Beginning Reading, Academic Writing Math Essentials, Homework Support, Algegra I and Study Skills.
Melodie Erwin
Certified Instructor
Melodie is a graduate of East Tennessee State University where she earned a Bachelor of Science in Education. She is also certified to teach Elementary Education Library grades K-12 and 1-8. In her free time, Melodie enjoys reading, shopping and going to church. At Sylvan, she enjoys having the opportunity to work in small groups with student to meet their academic needs.

Natalie Hawkins
Certified Instructor
Natalie is a graduate of the University of Lousisana at Lafayette where she earned a Bachelor of Science in Speech and Language Therapy. She is also certified to teach Speech Therapy PK-12th and Early Childhood. In her free time, Natalie enjoys reading and watching her sons play sports. At Sylvan, she enjoys having the opportunity to teach children something new.

Tamika McHenry
Certified Instructor
Tamika is a graduate of Lincoln University where she earned a Bachelor of Science in Education and Emporia State University where she earned a Masters in Education. She is also certified to teach EC-4th Generalist and ESL. In her free time, Tamika enjoys singing, cooking and reading. At Sylvan, she enjoys teaching in the small group environment.
