Peace of Mind and Worth Every Penny!

"Samantha Pina is receiving reading support at Sylvan in Pearland. She began with a fundamental reading program and has worked her way up to a grade level reading program focusing on vocabulary and comprehension skills. Samantha, who almost did not make it to 2nd grade, is now thriving as a 3rd grader! Her perseverance and hard work has truly paid off, and she is on her way to being an independent reader. Here is what Samantha’s mom, Sonia, had to say about her daughter and Sylvan:

Samantha was diagnosed with a rare disability at a young age. In the first grade, she was not reading or writing and it was suggested that she be retained. After a long battle between the school and me, Samantha was placed into the 2nd grade. I knew she was going to require some outside help, so I decided to call Sylvan. We started the summer before 2nd grade, and before too long, I began to see my Samantha get excited about wanting to read to me. She quickly became a child that I barely recognized. Her confidence level went from zero to trying and succeeding. We drive over 50 miles to the Pearland center because at mid-year of 3rd grade, my daughter is on the A/B Honor Roll for the very first time. I highly recommend Sylvan which has done wonders for my child. Every penny has been an investment, and I would not leave even if someone offered Samantha free tutoring. Thank you Sylvan for being such a guardian angel in my Samantha’s life and for giving me this peace of mind in my life. Sincerely, Sonia Pina.”

Just Like Everyone Else!

"Shawn Burks loves books and has a strong desire to be an independent reader. When he looks around his classroom, he wants to be like everyone else, but he knows he is different. Shawn has Down syndrome, a cheerful demeanor and a witty personality. When he came to Sylvan of Pearland, Shawn was excited about learning. More than a year later, he is just as enthusiastic as the first day he stepped into the center. Each day is a new opportunity for Shawn to learn another word or have exposure to a new book. Deborah Burks, Shawn’s mom, had this to say about Shawn’s time at Sylvan:

“What I like most about Sylvan is that they teach Shawn for Shawn--not his disabilities. When they work with him, they don’t see a boy with Down’s but rather a boy that simply wants to learn. The individualized program is just the attention that Shawn has needed. Sylvan makes learning fun for all of the students, and it benefits Shawn to see other kids happy there. The staff welcomes suggestions from a protective mom but is also ready with recommendations to improve Shawn’s learning. They are very helpful with Shawn’s education and extremely caring and considerate in and out of the center. I frequently run into Sylvan staff members around town, and they never hesitate to engage in conversation outside of work. Choosing Sylvan to help Shawn was a great decision for our family.”

Seeing a Difference Since Coming to Sylvan

"Kyler Lange receives beginning reading skills at Sylvan of Pearland. She is working hard on her phonemic awareness and comprehension skills. Kyler has been with us since last year, and is showing great improvement in her reading ability. Based upon the recent progress her mother has seen, she wanted to share this:

“Kyler is really starting to retain the necessary skills she needs to read. Before coming to Sylvan, Kyler didn’t like to read. She now loves picking up books and reading to her friends and family. She gets excited when she can read several words on a page. Her confidence has increased, and her grades are steadily rising. She is now getting 100% on her weekly spelling tests in school. We look forward to continuing her program through the summer! Kyler loves coming to Sylvan!”

Right in Time!

"Beyonce Roberson came to Sylvan of Pearland reading below grade level, performing poorly in mathematics, and lacking self-confidence. Mom and Dad had tried private tutors and other tutoring companies in the past. They were desperate to get their little girl the help she needed to get back on track. Beyonce had grown frustrated with school and was often defiant when it came to doing homework. Now, just a little over a month into her program, everyone who knows Beyonce is seeing significant improvements in academics and behavior. Her reading grade has come up from a C to an A in school, and she checks out books by the half dozen from the library. Her parents could not be more pleased with their decision to bring her to Sylvan. Helen Roberson, Beyonce’s mother, wants everyone to know about Sylvan and what we can do for students just like Beyonce:

“Beyonce’s dad and I knew we needed to get her some help and quickly. We needed a solution to our little girl’s academic struggles. We decided to call Sylvan and from the first call, we felt welcomed and relieved to have found some help. Because the Center Director is an educator, we trusted her recommendations from the start—she offered a great solution to give Beyonce what she was missing. We are happy and proud to see such a big difference in Beyonce’s education and attitude overall. I think to myself, ‘Now, this is where she should be. Where she is happy and thriving.’ We feel that we came to Sylvan right in time. They truly hit the target.”

"Dear Sylvan,

I have seen the commercials on Television advertising your help. That is what attracted us to come to you when we realized that our son was going to fail if we did not get him some help. I saw the look on the parents’ faces and the pride in the children's faces when it showed them doing better in school and it also brought tears to my eyes to think that maybe our son could do that too. We looked into trying to get him just a regular high school or college student to tutor him without any luck. Thank God. Everything does happen for a reason.

When Derreck came to Sylvan he was only reading on a Kindergarten level, I believe, or maybe the beginning of first grade. Derreck started at Sylvan the end of November. In approximately 5 weeks after he started he read, not a Dick and Jane book, but a normal book to me for the first time fluently. I cried from the joy I felt hearing him actually read. He asked if he did good and I told him he did wonderful and how proud I was of him. Here we are now entering our 6th month of Derreck going to Sylvan. For the first time this entire school year Derreck is passing in Reading. You can see on his report card the progress he has made. He went from a 61 to a 63 to a 68 now on his last progress report he is making a 72. I know that the grades may not sound high to some but to myself and my family and my son they are awesome.

It is just overwhelming what Sylvan has done for us. The pride that we feel for our son’s hard work and Sylvan's dedication can never be explained in words. He isn't through with his program yet and he does have to take summer school due to the fact that his reading grades were so low but I know that by the time he finishes his program in June and gets out of summer school he will be where he needs to be for the 3rd grade. He now has the confidence and knows how to read and to even comprehend what he is reading. I received a phone call today from one of his teachers at his regular school. (We call Sylvan, Kiddie College) She said that in order to pass from 2nd to 3rd in reading the kids have to be able to read and comprehend a level 28. Well, Thanks to Sylvan she tested Derreck this morning and he passed a test on a level 30 book. Once again, I cried, it even brought tears to my husband’s eyes. We just want to say THANK YOU SYLVAN for all that you have done. Our son would not be where he is today without your help.

Sincerely and Forever Grateful,
Bobby and Carolyn

"I am so pleased with Sylvan. My grand-daughter has really improved in school. She is now able to do most of her homework alone. Her grades have improved after only 4 1/2 months at Sylvan. I recommend Sylvan to anyone. before enrolling Ashlynd, I did talk to other parents whose children were attending Sylvan. Than you Sylvan! Continue the good work."

- Lee, Pearland grandparent

"I remember the first time I stepped into Sylvan. I was sitting at Mrs. Vanessa's desk and she was asking me questions. She asked what's my weakness in school. I said I don't get math and I'm struggling. Since I've been in this program I have improved so much. I started out doing 4th or 5th grade math. Since the last 150 hours I now understand 9th grade math. I'm only in 8th grade! I started in math essentials and now I'm in algebra 1. Sylvan has changed my life. On my report card I got a 98 in math That's the highest math grade I've ever gotten on a report card. And it's all thanks to Sylvan! Sylvan works! Trust me, I went there."

Improved Grades and Confidence

"Thanks to all the staff at Sylvan!!! My eight year old was barely making the grades to pass 2nd grade and she took Sylvan in the summer. Wow! Her grades have improved to mostly B's. The most change has been in her confidence, it has tripled. She does her homework almost by herself now and only needs us to look it over. She is very shy but is now more open and is making more friends. I just cannot thank Sylvan enough. If ever the need arises again we will gladly return to Sylvan! My money was well spent."
