Sylvan Learning of San Jose on Camden Avenue is proud to support our friends at both Ernesto Galarza Elementary and Hammer Montessori in their shared Walk-a-thon event on Saturday, October 29, 2011. The campus serves over 800 students. Located in the Willow Glen area of San Jose, (Ernesto) Galarza elementary school serves students from the Gardner neighborhood as well as Willow Glen. Over 50% of the student population receives a free or reduced lunch and almost 2/3 are coming from households where English is their second language. Sharing a campus with Galarza, is the Hammer Montessori elementary school, one of only 200 public Montessori schools in the country. The PTA, in partnership with the principal and teachers of both schools, strives to foster an environment for academic achievement, appreciation for the campus cultural diversity, and active involvement in the schools’ community. Each Year, the PTA sponsors various events to generate funds to supplement academic, cultural, and environmental enrichment for the students. These events are a major source of revenue to reach the goal of $25,000. PTA funds are vital in providing teachers with additional resources for classroom support, and other campus wide enrichment opportunities unique to the school needs that would otherwise not be available.

Dear Friends,
Great news…. Tickets to the Foundation’s 2010 Tasting & auction are it! And it is going to be a fabulous party! Becky Hettema has taken the lead this year and she has assembled a wonderful group of volunteers to help her. As usual, there will be many wines to sample – eight to ten wineries this year – also a beer garden with tastings, cheese and chocolate sampling and gourmet appetizers. Your $60 ticket will get you all you need to enjoy the afternoon, but please bring your credit card if you think you may want to bid on any of the tempting auction items or buy a surprise gift. This year the Foundation celebrates our tenth anniversary with our most ambitious goal yet: to raise and spend $100,000 this school year! We have also chosen a theme to guide our spending for the year: to enhance the school’s “Climate, Culture and Classrooms”. We will award funds that help maintain a vibrant school community, encourage respectful students and equip classrooms to optimize learning. Your ticket purchase will help us achieve these goals.
