Success Stories

Here is what our parents are saying about Sylvan!

""

Excited to Learn!

"Christian is a home school student who needed a little extra boost to get him motivated to learn how to read in the 1st grade.
He worked on Sylvan’s Beginning Reading and Handwriting Without Tears programs and mom and grandma saw a difference right away!
They began telling us that Christian was trying to read everything he saw from street signs, packaging in the grocery store and ultimately read his very first book all the way through with no help!

His mom had this to say about the Sylvan in Woodlands, “Since Christian has been coming to Sylvan, he has made amazing progress. He is so excited about reading and spelling and is much more focused. His handwriting is much improved also. This has been an awesome experience.”"

- Christian's Mom

Loves to Read and Loves School Again!

"Before coming to Sylvan in the Woodlands, Ben would not read out loud and hated school.

Now, he loves to read and is loving school. It is no longer a struggle to get him to go.

Since coming to Sylvan, Ben has had so much success, and he now has pride in his work. He is no longer afraid to read out loud and is doing excellent in school. Thanks to Sylvan, he has gained all the confidence he needs to be successful in school.

Thank you, Sylvan!"

Improved Reading, Spelling and Confidence

"The Sylvan program has helped my grandson in many ways. My daughter and I started homeschooling in December due to problems with the public school. My daughter put him in Sylvan in the Woodlands at least for the summer months. The way that the instructors work with him on a one-on-one basis has improved his reading and even spelling. He has more confidence in everything he does. His spirit had been broken in the public school system, and with homeschool and Sylvan, we have Brendan back. My daughter and I appreciate all of the time that has been spent with Brendan."

- Shannon D., Brendan's Grandmother

Fantastic Report Card!

"Logan attended Sylvan in Woodlands this summer and worked on his reading skills to get up to speed before heading back to school in August. After starting school and meeting with his teachers, mom shared the following about Logan’s time at Sylvan:

“I wanted to drop you a quick note to report the success that Logan has achieved in this new school year. He received his first progress report on Friday, and he was very proud to show me almost all A's!!!! We are so very proud of him, and he is proud of himself, as he should be. He is becoming a pretty avid reader. I think this new love for reading came from Sylvan, giving him more skills and confidence in his ability to read. In addition, his new teacher is fueling that fire. She has really helped a lot of the kids see that reading can be fun. Thank you so much for your help with Logan over the summer. I think it really paid off!”"

Study Skills and Better Test Scores!

"Brenden was having trouble with organizational skills and algebra, so he has been attending Sylvan of the Woodlands for Study Skills and Homework Support. He now uses his planner and best of all, he received a 97% on his 9-week Algebra exam! He comes in with a good attitude and works hard to complete the tasks at hand. Brenden has also enjoyed the extra activities that allow him to earn extra tokens and prizes at Sylvan.

Sincerely,
Denise Miller"

- Denise Miller, Brenden's Mother

Homework Support Makes a Big Difference!

"Stefanie struggled in English. She enrolled in the Homework Support program, getting help with her assignments. The extra support and help made a big difference. She even comes back sometimes when she needs that extra something for anything in school. Stefanie had this to say, “I have never made an A in English until now. I even made a 100 on my English final semester exam and Honor Roll! I don’t think I would have accomplished this without attending the reading and tutoring sessions at Sylvan!”"

Complete Change for the Better!

"Haden was struggling with most of his classes, facing the possibility of not advancing to the 9th grade as well as having to sit out extracurricular activities. Although we tried other tutoring facilities, none yielded the results he has achieved through Sylvan. He now has an A-B average! His self-esteem has improved, his attitude towards school has greatly improved, and he feels proud of his accomplishments."

Sylvan Study Skills = School Success!

"Christopher is an intelligent student. He had the same struggle that many high school students have, though. Studying and preparing for classes and tests was tricky and causing new problems with grades. His mom enrolled him in the Study Skills program at Sylvan. During the last conference, she brought in his last two progress reports from school. The first brought him to Sylvan. The second was cause for excitement. After being enrolled in Study Skills, every one of Christopher’s grades improved by at least ten percent or more! Mom is very pleased with his progress, as are his teachers. Chris is happy, too. He advises other students, “Stick with it!” The proof is in the grades!"

Positive Impact

"Holly has been enrolled in Sylvan’s math and reading programs since July 2009. She has worked hard in both programs and will soon head back to school with a more solid foundation in each subject. Mom says, “Holly loves Sylvan – she can‘t wait to come in and looks forward to being here!”"

Confidence to do it again!

"Kiana came to Sylvan in June of 2009 seeking help in reading and math.
She was struggling with self confidence that often leads to frustration with school.
Her parents and grandparents decided a summer at Sylvan might help her to increase her-confidence in herself and improve her reading and math abilities.

Kiana completed her math and reading programs at the end of July.
Her progress assessments showed growth of almost two school years in each subject.

More importantly, Kiana’s mom cannot believe the increase in Kiana’s self-confidence.
Kiana has definitely realized that she is capable and is ready to show her teachers this new school year.

About the new school year, her mother says “She is doing Amazing! She loves going to school and finishes her homework early. I cannot thank you enough for giving my baby girl her self-confidence again. If I had to do it over again we would have to choose you!"

Summer was the answer!

"Emily came to Sylvan in May of 2009 in danger of needing to repeat the 4th grade. She was struggling with tests in math and reading, but word problems in math were particularly difficult. Her parents and grandparents decided a summer at Sylvan in Woodlands might help increase her confidence in herself and improve her reading and math abilities. Emily completed her math and reading programs over the summer of 2009. Her progress assessments showed a growth of almost two school years in reading and math in only a few short weeks! More importantly, everyone has seen Emily’s confidence grow and she truly believes in her own capabilities

Emily’s parents say

“Emily's confidence in herself and learning abilities grew by leaps and bounds in just a matter of 12 weeks at Sylvan. Emily will go back to school this year with a new sense of pride and confidence she has never known before... Thanks to all of you for helping Emily improve in such a tremendous way!”"

Noticeable Difference

"Gabriel is going into first grade and was struggling with reading and writing. After attending Sylvan, there has been a noticeable difference at home. Gabriel's mastering the skills he needs to be a good reader and, in turn, a good writer. His mom says, "I already see a difference in his writing.""

Moving Up with Sylvan's Help!

"Ethan came to see us near the end of last school year. His teachers said he wasn’t going to be ready for second grade and his parents decided a summer here at Sylvan might do the trick. She’d seen us on TV and decided to give it a try. Now she says, “It works!”

Ethan started in the Beginning Reading program in the middle of April. By mid-June he had moved into the Academic Reading program. His mom said “He went to the Academic Reading program long before I ever thought he would so that’s great!”

At school, Ethan uses the AR program on the computer. It tests comprehension of books he’s read. There’s a big difference from first to second grade, which he was able to enter with our help. Mom says, “It’s neat to see it (his AR scores) in the 90’s and 100’s compared to last year’s 60’s. The reading has really helped.” Mom also says, “It’s great for him to go to second grade. We were all just ecstatic!”

Not only was Ethan promoted to the second grade, he made it halfway through the second grade skills during his time in the Sylvan Academic Reading program. He’s done so well here that his parents have decided to keep Ethan at Sylvan indefinitely in the Homework Support Program. Way to go Ethan!"

He's Ahead of His Class!

"Tyler started with Sylvan over the summer. He was just going in to kindergarten and his parents wanted to be sure he was ready and didn’t struggle any along the way.

Tyler is doing very well in the Beginning Reading program. He always comes in and leaves with a big smile and the teachers really love him. Tyler encourages other students to do their best when he is here for class.

Tyler has been with us three to five days a week since school started and his parents are really happy. Tyler loves coming here and is doing well in school. According to mom, “He is more attentive. We wanted him to be more receptive to different learning styles and now he is.” She said he had earned a 100% on a recent math test because he was paying attention! Dad even says, “He’s ahead of his class!”"

Goal Achieved!

"Cody Powers has been working hard at Sylvan. He is in both the Academic Reading and Math Essentials programs. He joined us because school was a struggle. He’s made great strides since he started. Recently he was even moved out of the resources classes he had been placed in because he has done so well!

Cody spends a lot of time encouraging other students because of his success. He has been heard telling others that he now gets answers right he wouldn’t have before and that it’s because of the help of the teachers here at Sylvan. He wants to see others succeed as he has because of Sylvan.

Cody says, “Sylvan has been a good experience for me. I was in resource classes but Sylvan helped me reach my goal of being in all regular level classes. They have taught me to do my best in all of my classes; they have the best teachers here, too. They are awesome! Thank you Sylvan!”"

Great Start!

"Alexandra has not been at Sylvan for long. Her parents wanted her to improve her self-confidence and motivation. She was not excited about doing her homework without prompting. Alexandra’s parents had tried other tutoring options and they were not satisfied with the results. They were looking to improve her reading comprehension and math skills.

Her parents have noticed in the short time that she has been here that she is getting her homework done on her own and is excited to work. On the day of testing, Alexandra said, “This place is great! It helps you learn much better than (other places I have been)!” She has not calmed her excitement yet!"

Amazing Results!

"Ethan missed a lot of school last year. His mom has been working with him at home and wanted him ready to start school again next semester with his classmates. She was worried he would not be ready. Ethan started coming to Sylvan in early October hoping to start school again in January. He worked hard and enjoyed the Math Essentials program. He said, “The teachers are nice.” In just 2 short months, he showed almost 4 years growth overall! In computation alone he grew over 5 grade levels! Mom is very pleased with the results and Ethan is proud of himself. Of his progress assessment Mom says, “This is great, great news!”"

Significant Improvement in a Short Time!

"Briana came to Sylvan of the Woodlands in August of 2008 to work on both math and reading skills. Briana’s last school progress report showed improvement in both areas! Briana’s mother said “Your program is wonderful and has made a significant improvement in Briana’s math and reading comprehension in such a short period of time.”"

Family Endorsement!

"Zenaido came to Sylvan in early October. His parents were worried he wasn’t getting everything he needed at school and reaching his potential there. He was doing very well in math but needed some help in reading. His big sister commented, “It seems fun here. This place seems to really help my brother.” Zenaido always has a smile ready for the teachers and fellow students at Sylvan. He has said, “I like it here. The teachers help me.” He has worked hard and it has paid off. He has done well since he started here, growing over a year in his comprehension skills! Mom says, “I have seen an improvement. He’s always happy to come here.”"

Reading at Grade Level! Thank you Sylvan!

"Amber came to Sylvan of the Woodlands because her self-confidence in reading was low. Our goal for Amber was to be reading at grade level and demonstrating confidence in the classroom. Amber always tried hard, but hadn’t been passing her TAKS test.

We worked with Erin, the Center Director, to make sure that Amber’s program went as planned and now we’re excited to say that Amber is now reading at a 4th grade level! Amber’s grandmother says “We don’t know what we would have done without you!” Her attitude about school and Sylvan has improved dramatically!"

Loving School!

"Tamisu has a long history of difficulties with school. She's young for her grade and has had a difficult time keeping up. She's been doing great things at Sylvan and is really improving. She loves it here. She is so happy with the teachers that "she wants to take the teachers to school with her," according to her mom. "She's very happy here!""

I recommend!

"Jennifer came to us at the beginning of the summer. She wanted to do well in Algebra in school, but encountered some struggles. She was more than two years behind in concepts and applications for math. She spent the summer working hard, mostly with the wonderful Ms. Danielle, and brought up her grade equivalency more than three years in that area! At the end of her program her mom wrote a letter of testimonial for the center. She had this to say: “Based upon the results of her progress test, I am very impressed by her rapid improvement. With Sylvan’s program structure along with its patient and experienced teaching staff, I believe she not only has improved her math skills but also has more confidence in her ability to succeed in math in the future. I recommend Sylvan’s program to anyone.”"
