STUDY SKILLS TO THE RESCUE

"Claire - "I believe the Study Skills strategies have been very helpful. I really like the Cornell method of notetaking and want to use that this coming year."

[Claire used to get stressed not knowing if she was studying the right material for her tests. The pressure was great, as she needed strong grades to be able to go into the field of her choice after high school. Over the summer, Claire made the effort to get textbooks from school ahead of time and committed to practice the study strategies using her actual school materials. At the end of her program, Claire was seeing the benefits; her school year started out stronger than ever...tests were less stressful and her class notes were complete. Way to go Claire!]"

SYLVAN REPRESENTATIVE SEES BENEFIT FOR OWN CHILD

"We see wonderful Sylvan moments each day in our centers, but they mean even more when they occur in your own home. My 14-year old son Cory entered high school this past fall and wanted to participate in sports. Cory was also in the college prep track. We were concerned that the academic load would be much with Cory's practice schedule. With lots of coaxing, Cory attended the Eastgate center for the summer and worked with Randy Emmons, a phenomenal instructor, in math. Randy realized his reluctance and spent transition time talking about wrestling moves and things that would interest Cory. Cory finished the program, entered high school in the fall and started a very intensive wrestling schedule. After a very hard fought year, Cory was allowed to compete in the League Championship for his weight division, which is very rare for a freshman. At the league tournament, Cory went straight through his opponents, pinning each one and winning the League Championship for his weight division. He beamed as he stepped on the podium to collect his medal, clearly the shortest and youngest. As we were driving home that Friday night after the tournament, I thought that Cory was asleep in the backseat. However, he was not. Cory said, "Mom, you know that I owe this medal to Randy and to Sylvan." I felt the tears well up in my eyes. He said, " Randy cared enough to make sure that I knew my math so that I would be eligible to compete. Many guys on my team could not due to their grades. So, tomorrow morning I want to go to the center and show Randy this medal." That Saturday morning, my 112-pound champ went to the Eastgate center to show Randy the medal that together they had earned. Thank you Randy for all that you do for the students in our center!!!"

HOW FUN IS IT? SEE WHAT THIS STUDENT HAS TO SAY.

"Hannah has attended the Eastgate Sylvan Learning Center just shy of a year. Her programs in Math Essentials and Academic Reading started well below her grade level. Her parents have been faithful to drive the hour (one way) to make sure that Hannah's needs would be met in a timely fashion. She has regularly attended 6-12 hours per week (12 in the summer months). Hannah's progress and confidence in her skills have grown by leaps and bounds and she now performs easily near the top of her 4th grade class. At our last ongoing conference, Hannah's mom relayed some comments from Hannah - "I don't know what you are going to talk about in there [in the conference], but I'm telling you now, I am NOT stopping Sylvan!" Needless to say, Hannah is continuing her lessons in Math Essentials and will soon graduate from her Academic Reading program. Mom and Dad could not be happier; with Hannah's increase in confidence and independence, as well as her current lack of frustration and procrastination with homework, she is well on her way to a bright and successful future."

LEARNING TO READ AND SUCCEED

"We got a call from Scotty's mom, Heidi, in April of 2006. His kindergarten teacher had just told her that she was recommending Scotty repeat kindergarten again in the Fall. Mom was devastated! Scotty was one of the youngest in the class and had never gone to preschool; but, Mom couldn't bear the thought of having him go through kindergarten again. Now, he was telling her that he hated school! When Scotty came to our Center, he did not know all of his letters, he knew just a few sight words, math concepts were weak, and he was very distractible. His skills were at the early kindergarten level, yet we got the impression that he was willing to work hard. Scotty loved the Sylvan Store and the attention that came with the tokens. He had rarely heard his teacher say, "Good job!". Heidi and her mother came in for the enrollment conference. The test results were not a surprise to them. They knew Scotty was struggling, and wanted to know if we could get him ready for first grade by the time school started. His grandmother used the SLM student loan to help Scotty reach his goals. Scotty started right away attending 6 hours/week in the Sylvan Beginning Reading program. Once school was out for the summer he increased to 12 hours/week. In August we adjusted his program to include not only Sylvan Beginning Reading, but also Sylvan Math Essentials. We planned to be a support to Scotty with continued lessons through November; he left us just before Thanksgiving. Four months later I received a call from Heidi. She said Scotty's teacher called and told her that he had moved up a level in reading. She couldn't believe it! He had started in the lowest reading group and now, according to the teacher, "He is right on track with where he should be in 1st grade." The work done at Sylvan combined with other things to help the focusing issues have made a huge impact for him this year. Heidi was almost crying on the phone! She was so appreciative of all we have done."

ACT PREP

"So far, so good, Nick takes his 2nd ACT test on 10/27/07. On his first one, back in the spring, he scored a composite of 27. Our goal is to boost it a couple more points.
[After this testimonial was given, we were told that Nick did gain the points desired on his October ACT - all four areas improved!]"

CONFIDENCE IN READING GROWS

"My son attended Sylvan from November 2006 thru April 2007. His grade equivalency for reading has improved from 2.1 to 4.9 and right now he is in the 8th month of the third grade. I am extremely pleased with his progress. His confidence when reading aloud has greatly improved and he sees his own progress. We couldn't have asked for more!"

- Paula D. - Mom of Ethan

BEGINNING READER - LOOK AT HER GO!

"Our daughter has gone from a Kindergarten reading level to reading at a 3rd grade level in 7 months. Her teachers and parents can see a remarkable improvement in her abilities, confidence and self esteem. Our primary goal was to get Kristine to her appropriate grade level, to read, build her confidence and get her ready for the next challenges. She has done extremely well and we are very satisfied.
Thanks so much!"

MATH STUDENT FEELS

"Jacob is ready to go back to school. He has said that he feels better starting back this year than he did last year. [Jacob is attending Sylvan in the Math Essentials program]."

- Leslie L. - mom of Jacob (and a teacher, herself)

Two-point increase in ACT score worth $37,500

"SPRINGBORO — For Gary Kurtz, the reward was much greater than the risk.
When his daughter, Marissa, 17, a senior at Springboro High School, scored a 29 on the ACT college entrance exam, she earned a one-year tuition scholarship to attend Lee University, a small Christian school in Cleveland, Tenn.
Later, the Kurtz family learned if Marissa scored a 31 of possible 36, she'd earn a four-year scholarship, valued at $50,000.
"A 31," Gary Kurtz said, "gets you a lot."
So Marissa studied on her own, retook the test, figuring she'd score higher.
Instead she scored a 27.
"I was disappointed," she said.
It was time for a gamble.
Gary Kurtz, a CPA, Realtor, certified financial planner and all-around number cruncher, enrolled Marissa in a six-week, Sylvan Learning course that cost $650.
"We decided to roll the dice," Kurtz said. "If I was going to bet $650 for a chance to win $50,000, and Marissa was my horse, it was worth the wager."
His horse ran like Secretariat.
Marissa took the test for a third time, and scored a 31, earning a four-year scholarship.
What was her reaction to the two-point increase worth an additional $37,500?
"She jumped up and started crying," her father said."
