Facebook fan pageTo get students excited about reading and encourage more adults to spend time reading with children, Sylvan Learning in partnership with the National Education Association (NEA) will celebrate the anniversary the 108th birthday of the late Dr. Seuss on Read Across America Day. Amber will spend the day at Stephen Foster Elementary where she will read an assortment of Dr. Suess books to over 300 students in grades K-5.
“The more children read, the more they'll enjoy reading and the better readers they're likely to become,” said Amber Howell, Center Director. “The NEA’s Read Across America Day is a day to celebrate the joy of reading and recognize reading’s importance in school and throughout life. We love reading. And, as educational partners, the NEA and Sylvan Learning want all children to love reading as well.”

This unique event takes place at the O2B Super Center and uses the "kid-inspired" features of the venue to create a one-of-a-kind experience for the event participants. Billed as a "Grown-Ups Day to Play," the event offers adults an opportunity to rediscover the joys of their youth with a night of food, drinks, activities, games and shopping at the silent auctions. Sylvan is proud to be a sponsor at this event which benefits the Alachua County Public Schools Foundation.
For the 11th straight year the community group People Against Violence Enterprises (PAVE) hosted the event, which usually draws between 3000 and 5000 people. The event is sponsored by a variety of businesses and community organizations, including Sylvan Learning Center and primary sponsor Meridian Behavioral Healthcare, Inc.
Sylvan was on hand to provide parents and students information to start the school year off right, and passed out Sylvan pencils, bags and tattoos. Families enjoyed educational sessions, food, games, and entertainment.
On January 12 and again on January 20,2010, Haiti, experienced a 7.0 magnitude earthquake and aftershock, killing what officials fear may be as many as 200,000 people and virtually destroying Port-au-Prince, its capital. In an effort to make a difference as well as give students the opportunity to be a part of helping Haitian children, the Sylvan Learning Center of Gainesville encouraged its students to donate their tokens to the American Red Cross Haitian Relief Fund.
“Tokens of Caring” flyers were distributed to all families, and were prominently displayed in the center. From February 1st - 28th, Sylvan students bypassed prizes at the Sylvan Store, instead, placing their tokens in a large collection jar. By the end of the month, 1019 tokens were collected! For each token collected, the students of Sylvan raised 10 cents for the American Red Cross. The student's efforts raised a sum of $101.90 which the company matched 100%, for a total donation of $203.80.
Sylvan is proud of its student's and the generosity they showed to help the victims of recent earthquakes in Haiti, by making a financial gift to the American Red Cross International Response Fund, which will provide immediate relief and long-term support through supplies, technical assistance and other support to help those in need.
