Questions and Answers about Sylvan Learning of Gainesville

What does Sylvan offer?
Sylvan offers individualized and personalized tutoring to a wide variety of students in grades pre- kindergarten through college and beyond, in the areas of reading, math essentials, writing, upper level math through calculus, study skills, homework, FCAT prep and college prep including SAT/ACT. Our programs are designed to help the student be more successful in a school environment.

Our customized academic programs at Sylvan address the specific skill gaps in a student’s education. The program begins with our in-depth assessment which helps us target the exact skills your child is missing, so we can tailor a personalized a program that delivers results. Based on the results of the assessment, our directors design a personalized program that can pinpoint and build the exact skills your child needs to become more confident and successful student at every grade level.

Our Homework support option is a student driven program that depends on your student bringing in specific topics to be covered in a variety of subject based on your needs. We also work in collaboration with your student’s teacher for optimal results. It is most successful when the student is accountable for their work and eager to improve in school and on homework. With either program choice, we incorporate methods for behavioral and motivational changes as well as for the development of organizational and study strategies.

What are the teaching methods?
Sylvan uses a mastery learning approach. Students are taught to master a skill, and demonstrate this to us, before they move on to the next level. The instruction of each individual lesson is one- on-one within a small group setting. During an instructional hour, a teacher may work individually with up to three students. The teacher sits on a rotating chair in the middle of a “U” shaped table. This layout allows Sylvan teachers to work on guided lessons with one student, while the other two are working on independent practice to demonstrate skill mastery. Although we provide premium 1:1 tutoring upon your request, oftentimes that lends itself to the student being dependent on the tutor. Our delivery of instruction in a 2:1 or 3:1 format allows each student to have his/her own personal and individualized curriculum delivered in a guided practice format. Using this method, we often see students quickly transfer their new skills to a larger, classroom environment.

How often/how long does a typical student come to Sylvan?
The length of each Sylvan student’s program varies depending on their skills and goals. We do NOT require any contracts; we only make recommendations based on your needs. Homework and customized program hours of tutoring are chosen by your family and confirmed with our director. All instruction is designed to complement and support regular school activities and takes place after school hours or on Saturdays. The Sylvan program is most effective when your child can attend a minimum of 4 hours per week per subject; more hours may be required to finish the program within a specific time frame, or if there are significant skill gaps.

Does Sylvan work?
Yes. In our math and reading programs we offer a guarantee that a student will test one full year higher on a progress test after 36 hours of instruction, or the student receives 12 additional hours of tutoring. Sylvan has been helping kids since 1979, and our research-proven methods work very well.

How does Sylvan motivate students?
Our teachers use their professional skills in the subject area, along with other skills that may include humor, a warm and engaging personality, concern for the students, and most importantly, praising the student often. We also use a token system that rewards students for positive behaviors while they develop new study and work habits. Students may spend these tokens in our student store.

How much does Sylvan Cost?
As each child’s curriculum is customized, the cost of our programs varies for each family. We do NOT require any contracts or minimum tutoring commitments. The total cost of your child's tutoring program is based on:
• Program length
• Tutoring subjects
• Hourly instruction cost
• Payment schedule that best fits your family's needs
Did you know? Sylvan offers a variety of payment options:
• Affordable monthly payment plans through our student loan program starting between $100-$200/month
• Convenient 12 month no interest payment plans.
