James received a Bachelor's degree in Business from the University of California at Berkeley, a Master's degree in Business Administration (MBA) from UCLA, and a Master of Arts in French. Prior to Sylvan, he spent seven years helping schools increase their visibility, first as Admissions Director for the International School of the Peninsula in California, then as Marketing Manager for the UNC School of the Arts in Winston-Salem, NC. He has taught at Sylvan of Greensboro, Kaplan Inc., and San Jose State University. James specializes in test-taking strategies, with his latest SAT practice scores being 2210 out of 2400 (99th percentile). James handles the center's student assessments, instructor training, marketing, and overall business operations.

Assistant Director, Greensboro tutoring

Amy Cranford

Assistant Director

Amy received her Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education from Elon University and spent a semester studying abroad in London, England. Prior to being hired, Amy had worked with Sylvan of Greensboro for two years, assisting us with our after-school SES tutoring program offered by Sylvan to Title I schools across Guilford County. Amy had also been a previous tutor for the Greensboro center with experience teaching our Math Essentials, Academic Reading, and Beginning Reading programs.

Instructor, Greensboro tutoring

Jeanette Foster

Instructor

After receiving her Bachelor's degree in Elementary Education from Eastern Illinois University, Jeanette taught Kindergarten and First Grade for several years. She enjoys working with the younger students because "they are eager, excited to learn, and able to absorb things quickly." Jeanette gets a thrill out of seeing the light bulb go off in a child's head as a new concept is understood during one of her teaching sessions. For 11 years, she and her husband have been with Children's Home Society as foster parents to newborn children who have been left for adoption. Jeanette has been an instructor with Sylvan of Greensboro for the past five years.

Instructor, Greensboro tutoring

Tonya Clark

Instructor

Tonya received her Bachelor's degree in Elementary Education from Rowan University and recently completed her Master's degree in Education, specializing in Mathematics. She has tutored for the Boys and Girls Club and for 21st Century Leaders in New Jersey. Because Tonya struggled in math as a child, she feels more capable of helping her students because she can relate to the concepts and challenges that they struggle with. Tonya enjoys math because, to her, it often represents a puzzle for which there is more than one way to arrive at the solution.

Instructor, Greensboro tutoring

Michael Maples

Instructor

Michael has eleven years of experience teaching at Sylvan of Greensboro. Over the years, he has taught every subject and every grade level that the center offers, while also providing training for our newer instructors. His favorite areas to teach are SAT Prep and Advanced Math (i.e. Algebra). A true lifelong learner, Michael is currently enrolled at UNCG studying Theatre Education with additional minor studies in Math and Psychology. His favorite motto (which all students taking the SAT should heed) is "calculators are meant to make your life faster, not easier."
