Testimonial from a Former Student
"It’s been a few years since my son last attended Sylvan and I thought an update would provide encouragement to parents struggling academically with a child facing similar issues as my son had while attending Sylvan and also to your instructors. During his senior year in high school, he showed marked improvement. While we still weren’t where we had hoped, the gradual increase in motivation and performance was noted. He is now in his second semester at the community college and doing well with hopes of transferring to a four year college after two years and is taking the appropriate courses to do so. Yesterday came the news that he received the only perfect score (50/50) in his English class on an important technical writing assignment. The assignment was to take information assigned and write both a summary and a longer version of the information in report form. He gleamed when he told me that his professor sent him an email of the news of the perfect score. He later commented that “to be honest, Sylvan was responsible for this perfect score”. At Sylvan, he learned the parts of an essay and improved his writing skills overall.
For years I struggled with the question “Is Sylvan helpful to my son if he’s not a willing participant”. But as you know, we persevered. The answer is now alarmingly apparent and I thank you for your years of encouragement and kindness you demonstrated towards him. All too often, it’s easier (and certainly more rewarding) to direct all efforts to the gifted child. Many more options academically are available to the gifted then to those trailing. And for this reason, I hope you share his success. It’s amazing the payoff that comes with patience and hope. Some children take longer to develop, however given additional time and counsel, blossom in ways untold."
