Answers to Your Toughest Homework Questions

When I ask my child if he has homework, he says he's already finished or none was assigned. How can I ensure homework is completed?

  • Make studying, not just homework, a daily habit. Even if a student does not have an assignment due the next day, he can use that time to read, review his notes or organize his backpack.

  • Ask younger children to show you their work so you can check it and help them correct their mistakes by working on the answer together. Ask your child to explain the reasoning for his answers. This develops critical thinking skills.

  • Be curious, not critical. If a parent is too critical, a student may lose enthusiasm for learning. Kids want to please their parents. Show him that you are interested in his schooling by asking questions. Turn homework into a nightly conversation

How can I create a homework environment that is conducive to learning?
  • Create a homework zone complete with dictionary, paper, pens, etc. Make sure the area is free from distractions.

  • Help your child set personal and attainable goals for each class, as well as steps needed to reach them

  • Plan for big projects or exams by using a calendar to set weekly milestones

  • Every child is unique with different learning styles and academic needs, it is important to personalize the learning process

Setting a Study Schedule

As the new school year begins, start it off with good study habits. Set aside time each night to allow for homework/study time. Take this time to complete homework assignments as well as review material that was presented in class. Your child’s Sylvan of Livonia tutor can assist with homework questions as well as effective study techniques. A consistent study schedule will help the school year begin on a positive note!

Book Adventure

Book Adventure is a FREE, on-line reading motivation program that rewards students (K-8) for their reading successes. It can be a great supplement to your child’s current reading curriculum. Upon registering, students are able to choose reading material based on grade level and areas of interest. After reading, your child is able to take a quiz about the book’s content. Based on quiz scores, children win points that are redeemable for prizes.

If you are an educator and would like to implement this program within your classroom, please contact us at sylvanlivo@aol.com or 734-462-1132.
