Meet the Tutors

The tutors of Culver City Sylvan Learning Center are all Sylvan trained and certified so that they can best address your child’s academic needs. Our tutors are dedicated to working closely with you and your child in order to help your child reach his or her goals. We start by pinpointing your child’s strengths and areas for improvement through the Sylvan Skills Assessment®. From there, our Culver City staff develops a personalized learning plan for your child and offers unique insights about what methods will work best with your child. Ultimately, our tutors will build a relationship with your child and provide a fun, engaging, and rewarding learning environment. The Culver City Sylvan Learning Center staff consists of highly experienced and established educational professionals who take great pride in their work with students who want to catch up, keep up, or get ahead.

Instructor, Culver City tutoring

Cliff K.

Instructor

Cliff is extremely passionate about education and is committed to providing the best educational experience children can receive. He is a living example of his total and continuous dedication to education and training, by holding several graduate level degrees (master’s and doctoral) in a variety of subject and from several universities as well as numerous professional certifications. Cliff has been with Sylvan in Culver City since summer of 2007, where he has tutored hundreds of middle and high school kids as well as SAT preparation. A very characteristic trait of Cliff’s personally and tutoring style is “can do” attitude, a unique way to explain rather complex concepts, mixing learning with having fun, being able to motivate and turn around the students in a topic – math - that usually is not very high on kids’ preferred list of subjects. Thus, most students love him, as he is working hard to make sure that all of his students make significant progress.

I grew up in the South Bay and graduated from Peninsula High School in Palos Verdes in 2002, I then did my studies at Long Beach State, graduating in 2008 with a BA in History and a BA in Music. I did my teaching credential work there as well, finishing with a Single Subject Credential this past January. I play saxophone in my spare time and like riding my bike at the beach. I am also a big Dodger and Laker supporter. The reason I work at Sylvan is because I recognize the amount of work and determination it takes to succeed academically in school. Without the proper teachers, mentors, and help I would not have been as successful in my studies growing up. I teach at Sylvan so I can help the next generation of children be successful in life.

Jeffrey S.

Instructor

I have been an educator since 2003 and have been fortunate enough to have been with Sylvan Learning Center for nearly a decade. I completed my undergraduate studies at California State University Northridge (CSUN), with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology in 2001; graduate studies commenced in July of 2004 with a Masters of Education degree and teaching certification from Pepperdine University. I am well versed in nearly all of Sylvan’s programs aside from SAT/ACT and Advance Math programs; my emphasis is in K-6th education. When my students are engaged, encouraged and entertained they can and will learn—optimizing their experience at Sylvan.

Instructor

Since I was a struggling reader in my primary years, I understand the challenges of learning to read on a personal level. That's why I specialize in early child development and enjoy teaching children to read. I build their confidence, teach various skills, techniques, and concepts to ease their way into reading. When my students make that leap into reading, it's like I'm witnessing a miracle. Through fun learning activities, marvelous manipulatives, and colorful phonemic books, the wonderful world of reading is awakened in children. I have built connections with families in the community since the year 2000. I continue to teach the family members and friends of my former students. It's such a pleasure to see my students succeed and their confidence escalate upward. I'm passing on my reading legacy to my students and I feel honored.

I have taught every grade from two to eight. Most of my educational career has been in administration, over 20 years as an elementary principal, Pre-K to 8, and a vice principal in high school for 7 years. I have both a teaching and administrative credential. My bachelor's degree is in education from De Paul University, Chicago, and two master's degree in administration from Notre Dame University, Indiana. Presently, I am semi-retired, but I am still working with students in and out of the classroom as a substitute teacher and tutor at Sylvan. At Sylvan, I enjoy working with a variety of students of different age levels and needs.
