"This is One of the Best Things of My Young Adult Life!"

Courtney P., a high school junior, always received good grades in school - except in math. At the end of the 2007/2008 school year, Courtney was told that she would not graduate with her friends if she did not attend summer school for math assistance.

"As a parent, it is the worst feeling in the world to see your daughter totally shut down before your eyes and not believe in herself," says Courtney's step-dad, Kevin. "We needed help - someone to work one-on-one with Courtney to ensure she 'got it'. We viewed Sylvan as a chance for Courtney to have a future."

Sylvan Learning was Courtney's school over the past summer. She participated in the Math Essentials program to solidify her foundation in mathematical concepts. Within just four weeks of attending Sylvan - two hours a day, two days a week - Kevin noticed a change in his daughter. "The real change came after Courtney returned to school. Her first comment was, 'I'm not stupid.' I never thought that she saw herself in that way. Sylvan helped lift the veil and she understands that she can tackle math now," states Kevin. "I even get reports from teachers indicating a huge improvement in her attitude and grades," he adds. In fact, Courtney's guidance counselor has mentioned enrolling her children at Sylvan because she believes in Sylvan after witnessing Courtney's success.

"I am glad that Courtney's step-dad gave her the opportunity to fine tune the math skills she will need to feel good about herself and to be successful in life. Courtney has a great sense of humor and we really enjoy having her in the center," comments Donna Ruark, franchisee of the Sylvan Learning located in Heath, OH. "We look forward to continuing to support Courtney and to helping her develop her academic skills to allow her to reach her goals."

Kevin works with his local school system, but understands that, although some children can master a skill the first time it is taught in the classroom, other students need personalized, supplemental assistance to reach their full, academic potential. Because of Courtney's hard work over the summer and the fact that she is no longer scared to ask questions during math class, she is now participating in Algebra I in high school and is expected to graduate with her class.

"This school year, Courtney has more confidence, talks about her future, and she smiles. Now that she can succeed in school, Courtney is open to the world and what her future can be," adds Kevin. "Seeing your child graduate is priceless. No one can put a price tag on a child's happiness and future success. Sylvan makes a great holiday gift. In fact, Courtney will tell you, 'This (Sylvan) is one of the best things of my young adult life!'"
