5 TEST DAY TIPS, K-3

Even the most prepared test-takers get test-day jitters, but you don’t want your child to be so tense that he freezes and performs badly. Here are five tips to help boost your child’s confidence and curb his anxiety.

  • Get to bed on time. Encourage your child to finish studying early so she can get enough sleep before the test. A well-rested child performs better in examinations.

  • Plan ahead. Make sure that the morning of the test is not hectic. If your child wakes up early, he won’t have to rush before the test. Tell him to pack his bag the night before with all the necessary materials, such as sharpened pencils and an eraser.

  • Eat breakfast. Studies have shown that children are likely to get better results on a test if they eat a light breakfast. Maintaining a child’s regular routine on a test day is extremely helpful, so ensure your child doesn’t skip breakfast and continues with her regular routine.

  • Remind her to ask questions. Tell your child not to be afraid to raise her hand and ask a question if she doesn’t understand the instructions. If a question is difficult to understand or there is a mistake in the test, encourage your child to ask the teacher. This can help reduce stress not only before but also during tests.

  • Maintain a positive attitude. Let your child know that everyone finds tests daunting. Tell her to be positive and have confidence in her abilities. She will remain calmer if you are cheerful.
