"It's frustrating sitting in math class and trying my best, but not getting it," explains Karlie, a 15-year-old upcoming high school sophomore in Texas. "Before algebra, I had an A average. I just needed help to better understand the math concepts and someone to give me a boost of confidence."

In early 2008, a friend of the family recommended Karlie receive math assistance from Sylvan Learning. "Karlie has always been a bright student and math came easy to her until Algebra I. As parents, we felt very frustrated because we were unable to help her with her math homework," says Karlie's mother, Kathleen.

Karlie participated in Sylvan's Advanced Math program for Algebra I homework support from March - June 2008. In this short period of time, Karlie's confidence in math and love of learning increased to the point that she was awarded "Most Improved Algebra Student" by her teacher at the end of the 2007/2008 school year. "It is a joy to hear your child say, 'I get it now,' after struggling through homework. My daughter's mindset has changed after going to Sylvan. If you don't think you can do it, you won't. I always knew that Karlie could 'do it.' I am so proud of her!" adds Kathleen.

Sylvan Learning franchisee in Weatherford, Texas, John Lee, agrees. "Karlie knew that she needed math help. Not only does she apply herself, she is noticeably more comfortable learning algebra," comments Mr. Lee. "I am very proud of her. I am also incredibly impressed that she took advantage to help herself over summer to prepare for the next school year. Taking math enrichment classes over summer shows a great level of maturity for a teenager."

Due to Karlie's success in Sylvan's algebra program, Karlie decided to prepare for the upcoming school year's geometry class. "To gear up for the next school year, Karlie decided to attend Sylvan over this summer. This will allow her to feel confident heading back into the classroom and already have an idea of what her teacher will be talking about in math class," says Kathleen. "I like attending Sylvan's summer classes because, when school starts, I'll be ahead," adds Karlie.

Would Karlie's family recommend Sylvan? "Sylvan has been a blessing! For parents who cannot help their children with math, I recommend enrolling in Sylvan's programs," comments Kathleen. "Sylvan taught my daughter how to approach algebra and geometry while giving her encouraging words.
