On April 27th, Sudie L Williams, eliminatory school in the Bluffview neighborhood, celebrated its first annual Catch Up and Read celebration. Catch Up and Read is a collaborative community effort between the school, Sylvan Learning Center, and The Salesmanship Club Youth and Family Centers, offering family education classes called, “Fortaleza en la Familia”. Special guest for the evening was Dr. Robin Ryan, DISD Chief Academic Officer. Parents, faculty, students and community neighbors who support Catch Up and Read attended the event.
The idea behind Catch Up and Read is for the community to raise funds to provide after school tutoring in reading to under performing students in close partnership with the participating school and parents of the students. In this initial go round, funds were raised to allow 36 Sudie students to participate in the program. Sylvan Learning of North Dallas provided the academic program for the students. The results were impressive. The program began in January 2010 and in 10 weeks of tutoring, students improved one full grade level in reading. A DISD curriculum advisor observed, “The enthusiasm from the students and teachers is refreshing.”
At the celebration event, each student received a framed certificate presented by principal, Lorena Hernandez. Half Price Books donated an on grade level book for each student along with several other goodies including the book, “Say Good Night To Illiteracy” designed to inspire students of all ages to read.
Involved community leaders led by Catherine LeBlanc are in the process of raising funds to continue and expand the program that Ms. Hernandez described as “making a big difference”. Anyone interested in learning more about Catch Up and Read or wishing to help can contact Catherine LeBlanc at cates.leblanc@gmail.com.

DISD Cheif Academic Officer, Dr. Robin Ryan, signed books for all participating students.
1. Have your student go to bed early the night before the test. Everyone's brain works better when it is rested.
2. Have your student eat a healthy breakfast the morning of the test.
3. Coach your student to take his/her time. Most students have the tendency to rush through the test and make careless errors.
4. Encourage your student to take mental breaks during the test. They can close their eyes and think about something else for a minute or two. This will help relieve some of the stress they may be feeling!
As the TAKS test approaches, keep checking this section because we will add a few tips every month!!
1. Let your child see you reading for pleasure
2. Listen to your child read to you or to relatives.
3. Reward your child for reading using praise, new books, a success chart, etc.
4. Develop your child's experiential background. This will allow them to relate reading activities to everyday life!
5. Build vocabulary activities through games and practice! Try word bingo or a word game together.
6. Use Bookadventure.com to help build comprehension skills.
7. Take your child to the library regularly.
8. Let your child get excited about books of his/her choice.
9. Turn off the TV and READ! Read the books that correspond to the upcoming Movie Blockbuster hit!
10. Make it fun! Act out a book together, take turns reading a paragraph, have it relate to everyday life. The more often they read, the more they will enjoy it later in life!
