"Our son, Zak, did not enjoy reading and would not read recreationally. He was in a special reading program through the school and didn't seem to be making any progress. We were frustrated and he was frustrated. I was afraid Zak would HATE going to sylvan after spending a day at school. I was so surprised that he actually loved going. He never fought me about it.

"August 17, 2009
Dear Sylvan Staff,

THANK YOU,THANK YOU, THANK YOU! My daughter, who ten months ago tested on a beginning kindergarten level in reading, just graduated Sylvan on a fourth grade level ready to start a new school year equal with her class mates. Words cannot show the change in her personal confidence. She has gone from a disruptive, distracted student to one who is very excited to learn, listens attentively, and is proud of her accomplishments I no longer have to give her rewards for reading, reading itself is a reward. Instead of tears and frustration I have to beg her to stop so she can go to sleep at night. What a difference! Imagine my surprise when she came from a visit with her grandmother telling me that she was tired of the "baby" books grandma was having her read. She requested to go to the library to pick out some "older" books before we went home.

I never would have predicted how much all of her scholastic scores improved with her ability to accurately read, comprehend what she was reading, and act on the information. Term after term I saw straight line, bottom of graph scores. Within three months of starting, Sylvan her scores took a drastic jump. After her initial success she became excited to see how much higher her scores were. At the end of the school year she was testing above the median of her class. Considering the she started on a kindergarten level I feel that this was quite an accomplishment. My daughter actually explained to her new teacher that she had been in Sylvan and didn’t need any “special” help anymore. She is excited not to be behind anymore.

You have changed her life. I cannot express enough gratitude for the positive, supportive, and rewarding learning environment you provided for her. She talks about many of her teachers often. I didn’t dare include any names, though I could many of them, for fear of missing one. Just know that you have made a very permanent difference in her life and she is the best Sylvan advertisement you could hope for. She isn’t sure that she wanted to graduate now as she misses coming to Sylvan and it hasn’t even been a whole week since she graduated.
