March Marks National Math Month and Pi Day
Local Sylvan Learning offers tips to make learning math fun(Baltimore, MD, February 15, 2009) – In recognition of National Math Month in March and Pi Day on March 14, Sylvan Learning is offering parents, educators and community members unique and exciting math activities for students in grades K-12.
Pi Day is the annual observance of the love of math and the mathematical constant Pi, commonly approximated as 3.14. To help motivate families and school classes to celebrate together, Sylvan Learning centers located throughout North America will offer a variety of creative activity ideas, ranging from Pi Tunes to Pi-Atholons.
“Pi Day is now in its 21st year, and Sylvan Learning feels this is a perfect way to help students to have fun while discovering new mathematical concepts,” said Judy Ann Brown, mathematics education manager at Sylvan Learning. “The National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) states that children as young as kindergarten need to expand on the geometric, spatial and other basic math skills they learn by exploring, investigating and discussing math topics. We want to provide community members with a way to make those lessons exciting and engaging in order to encourage a lifelong love of math.”
