Math Tutoring Reveals Gifted Student

"My son struggled with math for years. I had heard about Sylvan but never really took the time to investigate. My son really began to suffer in school and was feeling very insecure about himself. Finally, I called the toll free number and the young lady was very patient, kind and seemed to understand exactly what our situation was! I felt like she really cared. So I went in and talked to the director. April listened to me like I was an old friend. I cried and she gave me tissues. I told her what the problems were and she had answers! I felt so reassured. I felt like Sylvan could help my son be better in math and be a better student overall. And almost 9 months later I am astonished at the progress my son has made! He is 100% better than he was when we first went to Sylvan. He LOVES going to Sylvan. The people are friendly, encouraging, kind, patient and FUN! I am so thankful that we made the decision to enroll my son. I know that an investment in my son is an investment in a better FUTURE for our entire family and even our community. Better students produce more effective and productive citizens! Thank you April, Heather and Sylvan for putting my son on the right track! I LOVE YOU GUYS!!!!

Reading Improves One Full Grade Level

"My son Jakob started Sylvan the summer after 4th grade and before the 5th grade. He was an average student that struggled with Language Arts. His grades were OK, usually Bs and Cs and he had no problems passing the TAKS test (required by our state).

Just before school let out for Jakob's 4th grade summer, we received correspondence that he needed summer school. This surprised us greatly because he had had only 1 D for the entire year and had passed the TAKS test that year. What were the indications that he needed help? After speaking with the teacher, principal, school superintendent and, finally, the summer school principal, we still didn't know what was driving this assessment.

The teacher said she thought it was generated by tests Jakob had taken in the 3rd grade.
The supervisor said we should speak to the principal.
The principal was new and said all she could promise was that next year would be better (it is and she is doing a wonderful job this year).
The summer school principal didn't care what our problem was; if we sent our son to summer school he would take what was on the curriculum and if I didn't like it too bad.
Fundamentally, we didn't have a high level of confidence in our school system. We were so frustrated with trying to get a fact based assessment of Jakob's academic needs that Sylvan stood out as a beacon of reason in a sea of conjecture.

After extensive (8 hours) and exhausting (for George and I...Jakob seemed to love it) testing, Sylvan was able to tell us:
Jakob is very strong in math (his school said this was his greatest area in need of improvement...even though this was where he scored highest in tests and grades).
Jakob had gaps in his reading comprehension. This made sense because it was a reflection of his grades and other test results.

Over this last summer, Jakob attended Sylvan tutoring 3 times a week. We've watched his reading level raise one whole grade level (I think it's actually higher). More importantly, his new found confidence is amazing.

Feedback from Sylvan teachers was that Jakob is a very focused and hard worker. This certainly was our perception of him at home but it was the first time an educator had told us this. It was not what we heard from his school teachers.

Seeing how confident he is now, it's hard to remember when he was so quiet. He used to be so shy, he wouldn't return greetings to people he knew in public.

Jakob now orders for himself at restaurants. He speaks first to people in public. He looks forward to school in the morning. He's more comfortable sharing his opinions and views. He is finding his voice.

We can't thank Sylvan enough for their help! It's more than tutoring for our child, it's helping him grow to his best potential. Every kid deserves that."

Summer Reading Tutoring Improves Confidence

"My daughter asked – no, begged – her father and I to sign her up for Sylvan. She knew she was behind her classmates and would benefit from tutoring during the summer months. She worked hard and so did the teachers at Sylvan. She increased her reading fluency just as she wanted and started the next school year with greater confidence and better reading skills. Her dad and I were very pleased with the program and would recommend it to all parents and students that are achieving just at or below grade level. It really does help build confidence and improve skills"

Noticeable Reading Improvement in Two Weeks

"Within two weeks of enrolling our child in Sylvan Learning Center's Reading program, we began to notice that he was speaking more clearly and with an increased vocabulary. His confidence level has grown by leaps and bounds as well. We have no doubts that our decision to enroll him at Sylvan was the best choice for his future. The staff at Sylvan is very professional and personable. They have maintained a regular conferencing schedule to keep us updated with our child's progress throughout the program."

Math Tutoring Results in Remarkable Progress

"I decided to place my son in Sylvan Learning during the summer of 2008. Upon arrival he was assessed in both Math and English Language Arts, his math scores measured a fifth grade level. I was relieved to know what skills he needed to master but was unsure about his learning disability and interaction with the instructors at Sylvan Learning. I must admit there were times when I felt like giving up but I remained persistent and he has made remarkable progress.

Thank you Sylvan Learning for helping my son become an over achiever and confident young man.

Improved Vocabulary and Reading Skills

"Elena has really enjoyed Sylvan. Sylvan made a positive impact on Elena's confidence and improved her vocabulary and reading skills so she will be ready for 5th grade! Also, the positive reenforcement of the teachers and finishing all the work during tutoring made Elena want to go to Sylvan every week and learn.

2nd Grader Improves Two Grade Levels in Reading

"Tyler attends Thrall Elementary, and our son's reading was two levels below the expected reading level. We watched our son struggle in second grade and we tried different tutoring options, but our son still did not seem to comprehend. My husband and I contacted Sylvan (Round Rock) and after meeting with the staff to determine what exactly our son needed in order to succeed, I was ecstatic. My son has completed his sessions and I would like to say kudos to the Sylvan staff for their hard work and efforts with my son. It was greatly appreciated.

92 on TAKS Reading

"My daughter has been going to Sylvan for about 5 months. She has struggled through school since kindergarten and is in 3rd grade now. She was always behind, barely at grade level (if not just below) by the end of the year. I was in a panic this year with 3rd grade TAKS tests and her teacher said she was at risk of not passing 3rd grade. I am thrilled at her progress. I had serious doubts she would be an A student, I would have been perfectly fine with a strong C or low B. She has gone BEYOND what I expected!!!!! She made a 92 on the reading part of the TAKS and we are confident she will do just fine on the upcoming math part. I feel confident she will be above grade level since starting school and I am so proud of her. She has more confidence at school and does not panic when asked to do homework. I can see it every day in the way she approaches school now. We will have her in Sylvan throughout her education. It has made a world of difference for her!!!!!!"

Reading Tutoring Helps Round Rock Student

"My son is doing AMAZING!!! He has made almost straight A's. A couple B's but they are very high. He didn't lose any of his reading skills from when he stopped for the summer and started back at the beginning of the year. He was even a little ahead. He doesn't struggle with reading at all. He picks up books and just reads for fun all of the time. He is in a reading club at the library and read enough blue bonnet books he gets to go to a party.

The coolest thing going on with Christopher is the little boy he "mentors". He is in 1st grade and really struggling with reading and math. The 1st grade teacher was Christopher's 4th grade teacher last year. Everyday he goes to her class and reads and helps the boy with math and reading skills. Christopher loves it and the teacher told me the little boy is improving so much, loves having Christopher be with him and starting to feel better about school again. It was so awesome to hear.

Thank you for everything Sylvan has done for my son!

Sylvan Prepares High School Students for College Success!

"I just wanted to send a short note to let you know what happened a couple
of weeks ago. My daughter had gone to orientation for college at the end
of July and discovered she was supposed to have been reading a novel over
the summer for her freshman 1st semester in college. I was concerned, she
had 2 weeks to have it done. Well, my daughter finished reading the
novel with no problems and it was a wonderful success. She didn't
complain ONCE, read it with ease and was excited about the whole endeavor.
My biggest concern when I enrolled her at Sylvan was how she would handle
all the reading required during college. I feel much better about this
and want to thank you so much for helping her. She will be studying
neurosciences and I doubt she would have even considered this without your
help. Thanks for doing a great job. I feel it was money well spent!!

Yours truly,

Eileen Martin"

Sylvan Individualizes Instruction and Feedback

"We liked the individual goals established for Chelsye and the monthly progress meetings/reports. The confidence and skills in reading and phonics have given her a tremendously jump start in 1st grade and a love for reading. We feel that this was one of the best investments we could have made for our daughter."

Sylvan Study Skills Helps Build Strong Motivation

"Several things, I like that my son progressed a grade level during our first 6 months, and he learned some very needed study skills. Also, I like that April holds Jonathan accountable. April praises and discusses (calmly) issues with him when needed. He is not defensive with her like he is with me. Thank you April!"

Reading Foundation for Kindergarten Solidified at Sylvan

"My daughter responded to the teaching methods of Sylvan better than anything my wife and I had tried previously. The beginning reading curriculum was exceptional, and they even kept our Pre-K teacher involved so they could work together on the reading lessons. Kindergarten in Round Rock is much easier now that she is ahead of the reading curve, and a lot of the kids in her class."

"Phenomenal Results"

"This program and location is amazing. We saw phenomenal results in the 9 months our son attended classes."

Sylvan Helps Children Exceed Classroom Goals

"My son has been showing tremendous improvement after only a few weeks at Sylvan. He's meeting goals at school that were not expected this early in the year. I really like the way that Sylvan teaches a concept in multiple ways to help a student grasp the idea and actually learn instead of just memorization."

- Amy Bishop
