. Relate pictures in books to stories or pretend to read by retelling a story
Sylvan understands just how important it is for children at this age to develop effective reading skills to help them in all of their studies -abilities that will help smooth their transition to middle school/junior high and provide the foundation for continued academic success. Instructional emphasis includes the following key skills:
. Phonics
. Vocabulary
. Reading Comprehension
. Fluency
The typical student in our elementary writing program is enrolled in grades 4-6, although younger children have also benefited from Sylvan tutoring.
In Sylvan's writing program, your child will:

. Master age-appropriate writing techniques including effective paragraph development
. Sharpen vocabulary and spelling skills
. Improve grammar-parts of speech, subject-verb agreement, sentence structure, punctuation and capitalization
