Our Sylvan trained and certified tutors are dedicated to your child’s success. Working together with you, we will:

- Develop a personalized learning plan based on your child’s goals
- Offer unique insights about what will work for your child
- Teach each lesson the way your child learns best

Paul Tarsa
Executive Director
Paul became a Sylvan Learning Center franchisee in 1998, following careers with United Technologies Corporation and Kimberly-Clark Corporation. Paul has owned and operated three Sylvan Learning Centers located in Brookfield, Southington, and West Hartford, CT. Paul resides in Litchfield County, where he enjoys time with his two sons and participating in tennis and golf.
Jennifer Berth
Center Director
Jennifer has been with Sylvan since 2001, teaching every offered subject, and previously working as a Director of Education at the Southington and Brookfield, CT centers. Jennifer graduated with honors from Mount Saint Mary College, in Newburgh, New York with degrees in English and History, as well as dual secondary certification in both subjects. Jennifer currently lives in Roxbury, CT with her family and a menagerie of animals from dogs to swans.
Anthony B.
Instructor
Originally from Bristol, Tony joined our Sylvan team during 2007, and he teaches reading, writing, math and study skills. A current resident of Plainville, Tony graduated from the Central Connecticut State University with a Bachelor’s degree in Secondary Social Studies Education, a Master's Degree in history, and secondary education certification. Tony enjoys running and bike riding in his spare time.
Carla C.
Instructor
A Waterbury resident, Carla recently joined our Sylvan team, and she teaches basic math, Algebra 1 & 2, Geometry, and reading. Originally from Columbia, South America Carla graduated from Central Connecticut State University with a Master’s Degree Math and secondary education certification. Carla currently teaches mathematics in the town of New Britain. In her spare time, Carla enjoys working out, spending time with family and friends, and sleeping.
James B.
Instructor & SAT Prep Instructor
A Waterbury native, Jim joined our Sylvan team in 2007, and he teaches reading, math, writing and study skills. Jim graduated from Central Connecticut State University with a degree in Anthropology and the University of Bridgeport with a Master’s Degree in elementary education. In his spare time, Jim enjoys reading, basketball and eating pizza.
Karen B.
Instructor
Karen, a resident of Plantsville, joined our team in 2008 as a reading, math, study skills and writing instructor. Karen graduated from the University of Connecticut with an English degree, and then from Central Connecticut State University with a Master’s Degree. Karen is certified to teach English for both grades 4-8 and 7-12. A former Newtown resident, Karen most recently taught Language Arts in the Newtown school system. Karen enjoys cooking, running, and yoga in her spare time.
Lesley R.
Instructor
Lesley, a Southington resident, has been with Sylvan for five years and teaches reading, writing, math and study skills. Originally from Cheshire, she graduated from the University of Rhode Island with degrees in elementary education and biology, along with K-6 certification. Lesley is currently a stay-at-home mom, so that she may spend her days with her four little girls. In her spare time she enjoys reading, vacationing in Rhode Island and spending time with her family.
Sarah F.
Instructor
Sarah joined our staff in the spring of 2011, after taking two years off from Sylvan. Originally from Guilford and currently a resident of Meriden, Sarah teaches reading, math and study skills. Sarah graduated from Wheaton College with a degree in English Literature and elementary education certification. Sarah currently teaches math (K-5) in the town of West Hartford. In her spare time, Sarah enjoys reading, shopping and cooking.
Tahl E.
Instructor
Tahl joined our Sylvan teaching staff in 2006. A current Middletown resident, Tahl teaches math, reading, writing and study skills. She graduated from Central Connecticut State University with a Math degree and elementary education certification. Originally from Israel, Tahl currently teaches in the town of Berlin. In her spare time, Tahl enjoys going to the beach, skiing and photography.

Will, a Plantsville resident, joined our Sylvan team this year as a math and SAT prep teacher. Will graduated from Eastern Connecticut State University, with a math degree, and he is currently enrolled at Sacred Heart University where he is completing his Master’s Degree in secondary education. Yvonne D.
Instructor
Originally from Miami, Yvonne recently joined our team as a reading teacher. A current resident of Southington, Yvonne graduated from the University of Memphis with a Master’s Degree, and secondary certification in Biology and Earth Science. Right now Yvonne teaches Life Science in the city of Waterbury. In her spare time, Yvonne enjoys People magazine, movies, reading and playing video games.
