Originally from Lockport, New York, Lydia recently moved to Maine in January of 2010. Her education includes a Bachelor of Arts degree in English as well as Vocal Performance from SUNY Geneseo. She also holds initial New York State certification in secondary English Language Arts grades 5-12 as well as a provisional teaching certificate in Maine for English Language Arts grades 7-12. In addition, she has a Master of Science in Education degree from Niagara University in Niagara Falls, New York. She has had experience working in several different educational settings with students of all ages and abilities. She is thrilled to be a part of the Sylvan team!
EDUCATION: Secondary Education English from the University of Maine at Farmington with a minor in Psychology
CERTIFICATION: Maine Certificate-English Language Arts Gr. 5-12
SUBJECTS TAUGHT: At Sylvan, I teach Academic Reading, Math, Study Skills, and Academic Writing. Outside of Sylvan, I am a substitute teacher at Thornton Academy, where I teach a variety of subjects at the high school level.
HOBBIES: reading, walking, watching movies, and going to amusement parks
FAVORITE PART OF TEACHING AT SYLVAN: My favorite part about teaching at Sylvan is interacting with the students. They are all so different and fun to work with.
EDUCATION: BA in Communications and Advertising, minor in Sociology. Graduate Certificate in Literacy Education from University of Southern Maine.
CERTIFICATION: K-8 General Education Certification, Highly Qualified to teach K-8 Language Arts.
SUBJECTS TAUGHT AT SYLVAN: Reading, Writing, Study Skills, and Math.
SUBJECTS TAUGHT OUTSIDE OF SYLVAN: Language Arts(reading, writing, spelling, grammar), Math, Science, and Social Studies.
HOBBIES: biking, swimming, gardening, reading, and spending time with my family.
FAVORITE PART OF TEACHING AT SYLVAN: Getting to know so many new students and working closely with them on their individual program. I love the moments when they feel successful!
EDUCATION: BS in Elementary Education with a concentration in English from Winthrop College and University of Southern Maine.
CERTIFICATION: Professional K-8 and Gifted and Talented Certifications.

HOBBIES: Traveling, Reading, and Swimming.
FAVORITE PART OF TEACHING AT SYLVAN: I love working with small groups because I am able to give individualized instruction and engage with the students.
EDUCATION: Andrea graduated from Wheelock College with majors in elementary education and American studies.
CERTIFICATION: Andrea has her initial teaching license in elementary education. She is currently working on her Teaching English as a Foreign Language certification (TEFL).
SUBJECTS TAUGHT: Andrea tutors Academic Reading, Beginning Reading, Math Essentials, Study Skills, and Academic Writing at Sylvan Learning of South Portland. Currently, Andrea is working as an education technician at a special education school in Scarborough. She has taught second and fourth grade math, ELA, and social studies in Boston Public Schools.
HOBBIES: In her free time, Andrea enjoys listening to live music, being outdoors, doing yoga, reading, and cooking.
FAVORITE PART OF TEACHING AT SYLVAN: I love getting to know my students and watching them develop understanding and confidence in academic areas they were previously struggling with.
EDUCATION: BA Mathematics, University of Colorado
CERTIFICATIONS: AP Institute Certification to teach AP Calculus, BC, and AP Stats.
SUBJECTS TAUGHT: At Sylvan, I teach Math Essentials, Algebra, and Academic Support (including all upper level math courses)
HOBBIES: I enjoy sea kayaking, golf, and pottery.
FAVORITE PART OF TEACHING AT SYLVAN: My favorite part about teaching at Sylvan is watching students’ skills progress from one day to the next.
