Our Sylvan trained and certified tutors are dedicated to your child’s success. Working together with you, we will:
Welcome to our Sylvan! My wife Missy and I chose to be Sylvan owners because of the meaningful changes that we can help make in a child's future. We hope to meet you very soon!
After graduating from the University of Iowa my Teaching Degree and Reading Specialization, I taught in several school districts around Iowa City. Later, I worked for both the University of Iowa Foundation and Hewitt Associates, LLC in a human resources and classroom training role. When our second child was born, I owned and operated a daycare facility with enrollment of 12 children.
I am excited about the good work that Sylvan does and get a great degree of satisfaction in helping our students do better in school!
Katie Noll is originally from Manson, IA and graduated from Buena Vista University in 2012 with a major in English for Secondary Education (7-12) and a minor in Psychology. Katie is currently an English teacher for 7-12 grades for the Clay Central-Everly School District. Math Essentials, Academic Reading and Writing are the areas that Katie tutors at Sylvan Learning Center in our Spencer location. In her free time she likes to write creatively and travel. Katie says what she enjoys most about Sylvan is the opportunity to get to know her students on a more personal level. Working with the same few kids in a small-group setting allows her to get a better understanding of what her students need most, as well as what insecurities they may have when it comes to learning
Molly Chicoine comes to Sylvan Learning Center with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Elementary Education and Spanish (K-12) from the University of Northern Iowa. Molly began tutoring at our Sylvan location in Spencer, IA in August of 2005. Currently she is tutoring Beginning Reading, Academic Reading, Math Essentials, Study Skills, and assists with the Sylvan ACT Test Prep. Her highlight at Sylvan is helping the students gain the confidence and skills needed to be successful at school and in the “real world”. Outside of Sylvan, Molly teaches Spanish at Spencer High School. In her free time she enjoys traveling with her husband, Myron, and spending time with her relatives and friends.
Terri Groen has been with Sylvan Learning Center in Spencer since 2010. She graduated from Wayne State College in Wayne, NE with her BAE in Elementary Education. She taught lower elementary in Kansas City, KS, Florida and Minnesota before settling back in Iowa. Terri has completed her reading endorsement and has taught reading for the past 11 years. At Sylvan Terri tutors Academic Reading and Math Essentials. Tutoring children at Sylvan gives Terri the opportunity to work with children to help them gain success and grow academically. It’s very rewarding to see a smile on their faces and watch them gain confidence while they are learning.
My husband, Bruce and I have two children who have now begun the busy teenage life of highschoolers! In my spare time
I enjoy watching the events of my children, spending time with family and friends, reading and making jewelry and crafts.
Mary Ann Bohnenkamp came to Sylvan in August of 2012 and tutors Math Essentials and Academic Reading at our Spencer Sylvan location. She received her teaching degree in Elementary Education with a Reading Endorsement from Buena Vista University in 1990. She received her degree after marriage and having children so she definitely considers herself a “non-traditional” student in the world of education. Mary Ann has lived with her husband Jeff in Spencer for the past 31 years. Jeff is a managing partner at Insurance Associates of Spencer and sells commercial insurance. They have four grown children, ages 27 through 36. In her free time she enjoys reading, cooking, biking, walking, singing and swimming in the summer months. Mary Ann and her personal trainer, Sadie (the dog) can be found out walking in Spencer. She has also found her niche as a substitute teacher and enjoys that more and more every day. As for tutoring at Sylvan, Mary Ann says she thoroughly enjoys all of her fun and wonderful students and looks forward to serving them for many years to come. Learning really does feel good, and so does teaching.
Trudy Hallgren is new to the Sylvan Learning Center staff at our Spencer, IA location. She is primarily tutoring our upper level math students. Trudy earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Mathematics Education from Northwestern College and a Master of School Mathematics degree from Iowa State University. She taught high school math for 17 years before moving to Spencer. Trudy previously taught in the communities of LaMonte, Missouri, Graettinger, IA, and Indianola, IA. The past 10 years she has had the wonderful opportunity to stay home with her children.
Trudy and her husband Scott, have 4 beautiful children; one in middle school and 3 in elementary school. She enjoys watching her children grow and loves being involved in their lives. Trudy currently volunteers at her children’s schools, our local Down Syndrome parent organization, her church, and 4H-where she coaches a Lego League team.
Helping students to learn is what she misses most about teaching, and Sylvan gives her the opportunity to do that again. Trudy says her favorite part of teaching was watching the students become excited about math, and seeing that “aha” moment--when they really understand what they’ve been working so hard on. She is convinced that all children can learn math, if given the right opportunities. Trudy has a child with Down syndrome, and she expects her to learn math along with her peers. She, like many other children, will need additional help to do so and places like Sylvan can help our struggling students to succeed.

She also loves the positive environment and how the student learns that the skill can be applied to other areas of their life. Jennifer also works as a Title 1 Aide in the First Grade at Fairmont Elementary School.
