Meet the Tutors
Our Sylvan trained and certified tutors are dedicated to your child’s success. Working together with you, we will:

Tyler Spey
Center Director
Tyler joined the team at Sylvan as Director in October of 2010. He has been involved with business and community development for five years. In addition to his work with the parents and students at Sylvan he is involved with Empower Portage, a community development organization in Portage County. Tyler looks forward to working with many new parents, students and teachers at Sylvan. He is excited to see the success students achieve at Sylvan.
Lori Robertson
Instructor
Lori has a Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education from Toledo University and has over 10 years of classroom experience. Prior to joining the Sylvan team, Lori was a 7th grade teacher within the North Royalton City School District.
Barb Kaplan
Instructor
Barb graduated from Cleveland State with a BA in math and her MBA from Baldwin Wallace. Her background is high school math, but enjoys the variety of ages and subjects that Sylvan has to offer. When not teaching at Sylvan, Barb enjoys training and showing her dogs.
Vicky DeCarlo
Instructor
Vicky earned her BS in education from St. John’s College. She has worked as a tutor and test administrator for Sylvan for a number of years. “Having worked with so many different students, it’s always good to see them improve, but it’s even better when they see they have improved.”
Kim Arbogast
Instructor
Kim graduated from Bluffton with a BA in Early Childhood Education. Currently, she is a substitute teacher for North Royalton. Kim is at Sylvan because she believes in the programs, and sees the impact it makes in the student’s lives. Both of Kim’s kids attended Sylvan and it has made all the difference!
Katie Redfern
Instructor
Katie graduated with a BA in Spanish from Baldwin Wallace and studied abroad at el Universaidad de Salamanca in Salamanca, Spain in 2005. She currently teaches Spanish at Holy Name High School in Parma, and is working towards her Masters degree. Katie has a passion for teaching and giving back to her community.
Jean Davis
Instructor
Jean graduated from Miami of Ohio with a BS then earned her ME from Kent State. She has been working for Sylvan for 9 years teaching and has taught at almost every center in the Cleveland/Akron area. Jean loves helping students improve their writing and grammar skills to achieve their best. She enjoys writing herself and would love to spend all her time writing stories.
Chris Hawke
Instructor
Chris is a graduate of Kent State University where he received a BS in Geology and a MA in Education. Chris has taught at the Polaris Career Center and Midview High School. Any students enrolled in the ACT or SAT seminars will be working with Chris.
Andrea Dannemiller
Instructor
Andrea is a graduate of the Bowling Green where she earned a Bachelor of Music Education, graduating magna cum laude. Andrea is currently taking a sabbatical from teaching to focus on her Masters program. She has vast experience tutoring students Middle School through college in the areas of English, math and science.
Susan Richter
Instructor
Susan is a graduate of Cuyahoga Community College where she earned her Associate of Science in Early Childhood Education; David Myers University for a BA in Administration/Accounting; and Cleveland State University for her MEd in Special Education.
Susan brings a wealth of experience working with children of all ability levels, and her background as an Intervention Specialist will be a great asset to the Strongsville location.
Melissa Pawul
Instructor
Melissa is a graduate of University of Akron where she earned her BS in Early Childhood Education and graduated Magna Cum Laude.
Melissa has worked extensively in the Parma School System as a substitute teacher and summer school teacher. She has taken some time off to care for her two small children and is eager to get back into teaching here at Sylvan.
