Sylvan Learning to Provide Free College Prep Workshop for Parents
Seminar Offers Money Saving Advice on Developing College Action Plans(Baltimore, MD, January 15, 2009) – Families today are, on average, spending more than $1,000 per child on college preparatory books, materials and academic services for their college bound children. Sylvan Learning is helping to soften the financial blow to families through the launch of a FREE, national workshop for parents, “Test Stress: A Parent’s Real Guide to College Test Prep,” dedicated to helping families navigate through the SAT/ACT and the complex college admissions process.
The fun, interactive seminar will feature advice from Sylvan educators and leading college admission experts, college coaches and guidance counselors to help parents understand how to create a successful plan for the test-taking season. Families can then use their customized college planner to ensure their children are college admission ready.
“Today’s high school students are submitting, on average, seven to nine college applications, a significant increase from the two to four applications submitted just 5 years ago,” adds Russell Greiff, vice president of Sylvan Learning College Prep. “The rising application costs and writing requirements for each college vary and navigating the maze of college applications can overwhelm already busy parents. It is in a family’s best interest to be strategic in their planning, and Sylvan’s free ‘Test Stress’ seminar provides an answer to many parents’ questions.”
The 90-minute parent session will offer each participant a skill summary sheet for use at home, expert advise on the SAT/ACT Test, tips on succeeding in as well as tips detailing where to find additional educational resources to help students prepare for college. Events will also include light refreshments, Q&A sessions and raffles with prizes.
“SAT and ACT scores continue to play an important role in an applicant’s ultimate college acceptance, and it is vital for parents and guardians to be prepared to help students understand the process,” says Greiff. “Sylvan is committed to partnering with families to help students ace the SAT/ACT; and our free ‘Test Stress’ seminar provides strategic and tactical tools that meet families’ economic concerns and anxieties about college planning.”
For more than a decade, Sylvan Learning has been an educational leader in helping students increase their SAT/ACT scores. A majority of students in the Sylvan College Prep program increased their scores an average of 160 points or more for the SAT and up to five points for the ACT.
There is no requirement for a student or parent to be a Sylvan client in order to attend the “Test Stress” seminar. For more information on Sylvan’s “Test Stress: A Parent’s Real Guide to College Test Prep,” visit www.SylvanLearning.com.
