Parents Are Excited About Their Children's Progess At Sylvan

Sylvan, I thank you from the bottom of my heart.

"I am a parent of a high achieving sophomore college student. I attribute my son’s admission to both Sacred Heart Preparatory and then the University of San Diego to tutoring services he received at Sylvan Learning Center throughout many years. My son began working with Sylvan in the 1st grade while we lived in Maryland. He never took a break from his tutoring sessions and continued through the 4th grade getting academic support in math, writing and reading comprehension. Upon our son’s graduation from the 4th grade, my husband was relocated to northern California so we picked up and moved. What did I seek out first upon my arrival in California? Sylvan Learning Center!

We immediately signed my son up at your Belmont location where he continued his studies. In middle school, my son signed up for Speed Reading at your Burlingame location and then took a course to prepare him for his high school admission test. Twice!

After seeing the excellent academic results our son achieved through his work at Sylvan, my husband and I enrolled my niece as well. She enjoyed her years of work at Sylvan and progressed nicely through elementary school.

Now, as a volunteer community advocate for students in East Palo Alto, I am happy to offer a solution that works to the many parents who seek to encourage their unmotivated children in school.

If I could offer one piece of advice to you, it would be to make Sylvan affordable to the many low-income and underserved families of East Palo Alto by offering a sliding scale tuition rate. Your system works. It changed my son’s life and made him a more confident and able student. Parents with limited resources share the same dream as that of any other parent – to provide a quality education that will set a strong educational foundation for their children.

On behalf of the many students throughout the country whose academic lives you have impacted as well as that of our son, Alex, I thank you from the bottom of my heart.

We started our daughter, Hannah off with Sylvan, Now our son, Austin

"We started our daughter, Hannah off with Sylvan to help her begin reading when she was in Kindergarten. Now Hannah is in the fourth grade and her reading level is at the seventh grade level. She not only excels at reading, but loves it as well. In her spare time you will find her reading and drawing pictures of her favorite literary characters.

Now our son, Austin has started the reading program and already within the short amount of time he has been at your center, we have noticed an improvement. We read stories together at night and he is able to identify letters and their sounds. Also, he is able to retell the story afterwards. Although he is not reading yet, we can already see that this will be a smooth learning process thanks to your dedicated Staff.

I was a little bit doubtful that she was going to improve in 2 months what she couldn't do in a year

"Our daughter is 8 years old and she is now in 3rd grade attending a Chinese Mandarin merge program school in Palo Alto. She is also a very good tennis player and has to spend a minimum of two hours in daily training after school. At the end of the second grade, her Chinese skills were very good, but she was behind in English. My wife and I are not native English speakers, so we can't help her enough. This summer 2009, we decided to find a learning center which will help her to improve her reading and writing skills in English. We found Sylvan and she attended 12 hours a week in the afternoons. At the beginning, I was a little bit doubtful that she was going to improve in 2 months what she couldn't do in a year, but I had a great surprise seeing her reading way faster than before with a much better comprehension. She also started to develop a good taste for writing about her experiences in tennis. We have decided to keep her at Sylvan the rest of the year because it is a great learning program and study support for very busy children like her.

A Sylvan Family

Our son went to Sylvan years ago when he was behind in his reading skills. Not only is he reading beyond his grade level today, he is an A student with honors at an academically advanced school. Our younger child has seen her big brother's academic success and wants to emulate it. Earlier this year, she came to us and asked if she could go to Sylvan to move ahead of her class in math. She loves her Sylvan math classes and is enjoying the challenge of learning how to do math problems her class isn't focused on yet. Sylvan isn't just about raising grades, it is also about raising your child's self-esteem and fostering a love of learning.

Sylvan has made a big difference in Sophia's school experience

"Dear Sylvan Learning Center:

Just a quick note to thank you for helping Sophia grow, through your Beginning Reading Program. When she started only about 14 hours ago, she was in level 8 on school. This week her teacher told me she was in level 24. She was the second highest reader in her classroom.

Last week she received an award for getting only 3’s and 4’s on her report card. This is like an honor roll for First Graders.

She loves reading and writing and drawing. She does her homework eagerly and without me having to remind her. Sylvan has made a big difference in Sophia’s school experience.

My son has always had trouble with his writing skills. He is entering the seventh grade in Sept. and I wanted to make writing easier for him next year. He entered the Academic Writing Program in June, 2000 and Danny has completed two published compositions,

The compositions are fantastic. The skills are at grade level and he is genuinely enjoying the lessons. Last week he wrote a thank you letter to a relative on his own starting with a rough draft and completing the letter independently. It was wonderful to see his improvement and confidence in the writing process.

"When my daughter was falling behind in Math during her 1st Grade, I looked for a tutoring center that stressed learning a good conceptual foundation, rather than a place that does a lot of repetitive math exercises. "Our daughter has always had a difficult time with math. Before she began the Sylvan program, she was completely lost at school, and as a result, hated going. Homework was a nightmare we all dreaded.

The tutors at Sylvan recognized that she needed to build a better foundation before she could go on. Several months later, she has gone from struggling with remedial math, to confidently and quickly completing grade level assignments. Not only does she complete her work at Sylvan, but she breezes through the homework the tutor assigns. We couldn't be happier with her success."

"We were concerned about our 3rd graders STAR scores. He goes to a Spanish immersion program at Castro Elementary school and did not have the grounding in English to do well on this test.

But more worrisome to me, he didn't enjoy reading. However, he loved audiobooks and being read to, so I wanted to support and set free his "inner reader".

Sylvan's assessment and guarantee (they guarantee they can bring a kid up one grade level in 36 sessions...exactly the distance our child was lagging) gave us the peace of mind to enroll him.

We have a few weeks to go til the 36 session and subsequent assessment, but have noticed a dramatic change in his reading ability and enthusiasm.

Nick and Annette, who run the center, have been extremely responsive and great partners in this endeavor. All the teachers that have led our son's sessions have been high quality.

I have put a lot of effort into homework help, finding tutors on our own, etc. but have found the money put into Sylvan a great investment! (for the record, we did not price shop around, having gone on word of mouth recommendation that Sylvan was the best solution.)"

Improve from "D" & "F" to all "A" & "B" Grades

" My son-Drew has been receiving a lot of "D" & "F" grades. My husband and I have been very frustrated. Drew needs to improve study skills, manage homeworks & projects, and sharpen math skills (mostly in algebra II and trig). We enrolled Drew at Sylvan in October. He is now an all "A" & "B" students 5 months later (March). Sylvan set up 3 different programs for Drew and has worked out very well. Sylvan log into Drew's school system, print out all his assignments & grades and ensure that Drew is managing his school work correctly. Sylvan also improved Drew's study skills and math skills.

We just received Drew's grade reports and are celebrating for his success brought by Sylvan!
