Meet the Tutors
Our Sylvan trained and certified tutors are dedicated to your child’s success. Working together with you, we will:

Barbara Dwyer
Center Director
Barbara manages the daily operations at the Vacaville Center. Barbara brings a wealth of experience to the Vacaville center. Previous to overseeing our staff and programs she was a National teacher trainer for The Job Journey. She has worked in the field of education and human resources for the past 25 years.
Nancy Zawadski
Executive Director
Nancy works effortlessly to support the managerial staff of seven centers. She has worked for Sylvan for ten years. Prior to Sylvan she had a catering company and taught K-8. She gets up a 6 a.m. to take long walks in the Berkeley hills with Dave, her husband of 42 years.
Jeff Neilson
Math Teacher Extraordinaire
Hi, my name is Jeff Neilson and I am a math teacher. I started at Sylvan in November 2005 while in-between jobs and just stayed here. I enjoy this job very much!
My philosophy on education is exactly the same as Sylvan's: Learning feels good. I try to make sure my students have fun, stay challenged, and I always encourage them to ask questions.
Phyllis Beaver
Beginning Reading Teacher
I was born in Pennsylvania, raised in Ohio, and attended college in Indiana. I had a career in music (as a keyboard player and music teacher), worked in music studies, and also taught elementary through college level music. I have been an instructor at Sylvan Learning now since 2002.
Life is a journey with many ups and downs and turns. Taking one day at a time and relying on my faith in God’s plan and direction is how I deal with circumstances. My teaching philosophy is to learn all I can and to pass on to young people the inspiration to seek knowledge and wisdom for life’s challenges.
Kairman Malak
Math Teacher
I was born in Egypt and came to the United States in 1977. I have twin, twenty-six-year-old daughters. I love traveling to Europe and Egypt to visit family. I have been working at Sylvan Learning for over 12 years now! I believe that education is meant to build the student’s future, both academically and socially. Education is for everyone - no matter who they are.
Viki Fischer
Tester/Teacher
I am Viki Fischer and I have been with Sylvan since November 2008. I give assessments to prospective students during the week, and occasionally on Saturdays. I previously taught 1st through 3rd grade in Oregon, and now teach Beginning Reading at Sylvan. My favorite part about Sylvan is all the great people here.
Loren Ferrero
Beginning and Academic Reading Instructor
As a retired teacher and former elected Council member with the City of Dixon (2002-2006), I now get to assist Sylvan students in achieving their educational goals. In particular I enjoy the small group learning environment we can provide, and the warm family feel among my fellow instructors. I enjoy the opportunity to use my skills in the small group setting that Sylvan provides.
Kimberly Tufveson
Reading and Writing Instructor
While studying Art History at UC Davis I developed a passion for teaching. I served as a substitute teacher for both the Esparto and Fairfield-Suisun Unified School Districts, and joined the Sylvan Learning team in October 2006. I love working with my Sylvan students and helping them to strengthen their reading and writing skills!
Jami Glaspey
Customer Service
I graduated from Vacaville High school June 2010 and am currently enrolled at Solano Community College as an aspiring Psychologist. I absolutely love working with kids and being around them, and that is why I am here at my local Sylvan Learning Center. I get to interact with and seat students each night, and support the Instructors by pulling necessary lesson plans. I am here to make this learning environment pleasurable to all the students, parents, and staff!
