Tips for Parents: Enriching & Engaging Emerging Study Habits

Organization, time management, note taking, test taking and strategic reading are all essential study skills that are first introduced to young people in the classroom, but ultimately transfer far beyond school.

Because life is a balance of basic core skills (reading, math), social skills (communication), and responsibility skills (organization, time management), parents need to nourish all of these skills, not just the ones that yield a grade. To help your child develop these skills Sylvan recommends the following:

Organization and Time Management

Have students use a planning calendar to track responsibilities.
Don't be afraid of technology! Encourage students to use electronic devices for organization and time management just like you do.
Have your child set alarms and notifications for beginning and end of study or homework time.
Set up an electronic or online calendar for school. Use categories like Test Dates, Project Deadlines, Study Group Meetings, Days Off, and other categories appropriate for scholastic events and dates.

Note Taking

Don’t panic if a child’s notes look sloppy and disorganized. It’s often just a sign of a student with an active mind who is organizing things in ways that work best for him or her.

Have children identify the most important points while reviewing notes and highlight them.

Test Taking

Urge a student to study over a period of days or weeks instead of cramming the night before.

Encourage them to answer test questions they know first and then go on to more challenging questions.

Reading

Encourage young readers to use all the clues available to them while reading, such as headlines, pictures, captions, etc.

Urge them to read
different types of writing, such as books of fiction and nonfiction, newspaper and magazine articles, letters, and websites.

Don't be afraid of new forms of media!
Child-appropriate websites and blogs are a great way to teach students that reading skills extend to entertainment, self-expression, and social relationships. Think about all the reading you do online every day...help your child be successful in a 2.0 world by relating reading traditional print materials to electronic ones.

Talk with kids after they read a book or article. Have them tell you what the story was about, why it did or didn’t interest them, and how it related to their life.

Summer is a Child’s Opportunity to Learn

Skills and knowledge gained throughout the school year fade during the summer months. According to Sylvan Learning, the leading provider of tutoring to students of all ages, grades and skill levels, loss of content retention begins within 24 to 48 hours of learning unless the new information is reinforced or applied immediately. After a month without reinforcement, approximately 80 percent of what a student has recently learned can be lost.

For children who have been struggling at school, summer can be their opportunity to catch-up on key skills and feel more confident when they head back to class. For students who do well, it’s an opportunity to keep their enthusiasm for learning high.

Parents can play a key role in reinforcing learning on an ongoing basis. The education experts at Sylvan Learning have prepared practical tips for integrating continuous learning into fun, family activities all summer long:

Checklist: Summer Fun That’s Educational, Too

§         Read with your child.  Reading to young children nurtures an interest in language, words and communication. For older kids, reading together can be fun and interesting. Parents can even turn Harry Potter or Twilight mania into a learning opportunity. Read the books together with your children and ask questions about the plot and characters.

§         Search for reading activities on the Internet and create a reading list. There are an abundance of sites that provide summer reading lists for children. At www.BookAdventure.com,children (grades K-8) create personalized books lists from more than 7,500 recommended titles, take quizzes on the books they’ve read at school or at home, and earn points towards small prizes for understanding the books they’ve read.

§         Visit the library. Libraries can recommend books appropriate for your child’s reading level and interests, and many libraries offer free children’s programs.

§         Keep a journal. Give your child an empty notebook to keep a summer journal. Regular entries will keep writing skills active.

§         Summer enrichment programs. There are a variety of enrichment programs available for children. Sylvan Learning offers engaging programs that keep the interest and fun in learning alive through the summer and into the school year.

End of Summer Graduation and Successful Student Celebration!

Our End of Summer Graduation and Successful Student Celebration was a rousing success! Every few months, we at Sylvan in Kendall spend an evening celebrating our students, their families, and our staff of Sylvan teachers and assistants. This season's party was held on August 26th at 5:30 p.m. A gracious turn out of students and their families and friends showed up to celebrate each other's successes in our center programs and in their summer months of learning. We proudly hosted them and treated all who attended to a pizza party and some back-to-school goody bags. Among the attendees were current and former students, their parents and families, our teachers and their families, and our directors, David and Cristy. We handed out certificates for achievements in progress tests, completion of skill levels, transitions from one program to another, and graduation from Sylvan. Additionally, we concluded our Student Summer Raffle by holding a kid-aided drawing and handing out well-earned prizes. Our teachers, too, received a token of appreciation for their hard work and service to our families.

Thanks to everyone who came out and supported our students! Below is, as promised, a slide show of our party. See you at the next Sylvan celebration!

Here is a letter from one of our Essay Contest winners:

I had a wonderful experience visiting Local 10 News. Laurie Jennings was a polite anchor woman and was very informative. She was extremely intelligent and enlightened me with her occupation. I appreciate that she took time to explain in detail how the newscast works. Her tour, knowledge, personality, and courtesy impressed me and made me appreciate her and her work more. She gave me an insight to her hectic life and taught me how the news works, which I may add is very intriguing. I enjoyed being “backstage” and watch the news that I watch daily on the television. I felt honored to have been chosen as a winner. The SAT prep class itself has been a fantastic experience. My teacher Danny has taught me several key test taking tricks that I am positive will help me out in the SAT. I would like to thank Sylvan for giving me this opportunity to enhance my knowledge.
