Returning Sylvan Parent
""My son first attended Sylvan when during the third 9-week grading period he was tested at 80 words per minute (WPM) in reading and needed to be at 90 WPM to finish 1st grade and be promoted into 2nd grade. His deficiency was noted the 3rd week of March in 2007 and by the end of the school year in May, he was reading 125 WPM with a comprehension rate of 100%. When he started 2nd grade he was reading 165 WPM with a comprehension rate of 100%.
He went on to score 100% in both the math and reading portions of the TAKS test in 3rd grade. In 4th grade he was placed with a teacher that was a taskmaster and probably the hardest teacher he has had to date. She was demanding and required excellence which caused him to struggle with the workload in school and his extracurricular sports. It seemed to me that he was not "organized" and when he was tested at Sylvan, that is exactly what the test showed. I enrolled him in the study skills program and noticed a tremendous improvement in his grades, getting him back on honor roll. At home, he was organizing various things around the house and when I asked him where he learned how to do that, his reply was simple: "Sylvan."
I would highly recommend the Sylvan on North Mesa to any parent with a child that is struggling academically. The skills he is learning now are going to be the ones that carry him through college later."
