Centers Celebrate Anniversary
The locally owned Newport News-Yorktown and Williamsburg Sylvan Learning Centers, franchisees of the leading provider of tutoring to students of all ages, grades and skill levels, are celebrating their 23nd and 13th anniversary in the community. Both Sylvan Centers offer a variety of educational programs and personalized learning plans that help children reach their full potential and help families reach their academic goals.
Greg Perry, Executive Director and Owner of the Newport News- Yorktown Center and Williamsburg centers, explains, “Our goal is to assist local students in developing the skills, habits and attitudes needed for lifelong success. Only Sylvan offers a proven process that sets us apart from tutors and other educational services. Our nationally-acclaimed programs incorporate a proven system of learning that will help your child reach the potential you know is there.”
The Sylvan Learning Center in Newport News began offering math, reading, and study skills programs in 1989. The Williamsburg Center began helping families in 1999. Sylvan’s approach to supplemental education focuses on creating personalized academic programs using mastery learning and incorporating the following elements:
*Preliminary assessment to determine learning strengths and weaknesses
*Learning programs customized to address the exact skills your child needs in order to obtain academic success
*Student/teacher ratio of 3:1 or below that allows for personal attention and support
*Unique motivational programs using positive reinforcement and rewards
*Regular updates and progress reports with student’s parents and teachers to ensure the progress made at Sylvan is realized in the child’s classroom
*Sylvan-trained and Sylvan-certified personal instructors who create an environment for learning that helps students master the skills necessary for success in school and in life
Williamsburg Center Now "Super Math Certified"
As the result of completing a rigorous course of instruction and certification exams, our center recently was authorized to be designated as Sylvan "Super Math Certified." This certification guarantees that our center has at least three full-time staff on board who have been trained in the current trends in mathematics policy and are fully knowledgeable of math content areas taught at the center. In addition to our Executive Director, Greg Perry, our Center Director, Jimmy Milcarek, and our Director of Education, Leah Marinelli Beyer are fully trained. We have a full staff of education professionals who can teach everything from basic math to calculus (and more!)
Sylvan Williamsburg Approved as Supplemental Educational Services Provider
In June, the Commonwealth of Virginia Department of Education notified us that the the Sylvan Learning Centers in Newport News and Williamsburg have been approved to continue as supplemental educational services providers for 2011-2012. We will be working with school divisions from Newport News to Richmond to help students meet the standards of the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001. In Williamsburg we can provide free tutoring for eligible students at D.J. Montague at the school or at the Sylvan Center.
